According to El Mundo Deportivo, Inter Milan are in talks with FC Barcelona representatives to acquire the signature of Spanish U21 international Sergi Roberto.

The initiation of interest in Sergi Roberto became evident when FC Barcelona teammate and Spanish international Pedro Rodriguez extended his contract to stay at the club until June 30, 2019.

Pedro, who has been at the centre of transfer speculation after the €94 million (£75 million) signing of Liverpool, Barclays Premier League Player of the Season, and Uruguayan international Luis Suarez, has scared off any other European club offers and maintains his €150m (£110m) buyout clause.

Sergi Roberto, who has come up through famous FC Barcelona youth system La Masia, has been with the club since age 14.

Originally from Reus, Tarragona, Catalonia (autonomous community in northeast Spain), Sergi Roberto has managed 159 appearances with 11 goals in the senior squad between 2010-2015.

This season FC Barcelona became the first club ever to achieve the European treble twice (2009 previously), claiming La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League this term. Under present manager Luis Enrique. Sergi Roberto made 14 appearances in that run, scoring twice in the Copa del Rey.

Inter have been busy so far in the transfer market, approaching players in Spain that suitably fit their club. They are aiming to return to the previous success created by Jose Mourinho, before the turn of the decade.

Could he still have a part to play in Barcelona?

Barcelona are still suffering from the transfer ban, that was inflicted upon them last summer, because of breaking FIFA youth player regulations revolving around the purchase of U18 Croatian international Alen Halilovic. That means Sergi Roberto is likely to remain at the club, despite the return of Rafinha Alcantara from Celta Vigo.

Transfermarkt has the 23-year-old central midfielder listed at an $8m transfer value. Sergi Roberto's contract expires June 30, 2019.
