The Nerazzurri are aiming to reinforce their rearguard, being linked with a number of defensive targets, the latest being Miranda of Atletico Madrid and AS Monaco man Aymen Abdennour, but will have to beat rivals AC Milan to Miranda's signature.

Another man mentioned is Antonio Rüdiger, currently of VfB Stuttgart, and a current German U21 international with six appearances for the full squad.

After an under-par season in which the Inter defence leaked plenty of goals, it is no surprise to see Roberto Mancini taking action in order to strengthen his squad to contend for next season.

It was a similar situation for Milan under Inzaghi last season, struggling to settle on a back four let alone a centre-back partnership. With Alex, Philippe Mexes, Adil Rami and Cristian Zapata all likely to leave, the red-and-blacks need reinforcement if they are to improve next season.

The aforementioned Miranda would no doubt be a superb coup for Inter or AC, as a solid and experienced defender with experience playing at the very highest level.

The Brazilian centre-half has 115 appearances for Atleti, winning major honours in his time at the club such as La Liga in 2014, the Copa del Rey a year previous and the Europa League a year before that in 2012. Furthermore, he was part of the side that made it to the Champions League final a year ago, narrowly losing out on a winners medal.

At 30 years of age, Miranda still has a lot to offer, and the Inter backline could really use a composed head to nurture along the upcoming talents such as Isaac Donkor and newly-acquired Jeison Murillo, previously of Granada.

With just a year left on his contract, however, Atletico Madrid will be tempted to cash in this summer as Miranda possibly surplus to requirements next season due to the development of José Giménez.

Abdennour set for move?

The other target is Aymen Abdennour of Monaco, a 25-year-old defender who has caught the eye of a lot of clubs since breaking into the starting line-up during 2014.

The Tunisian international has 18 appearances in Ligue 1 this campaign, as well as six in the Champions League, even scoring a goal against Zenit St. Petersburg and helping his side progress in the knockout stages against Arsenal.

As of yet, there is no evidence a bid has been made by Inter, but it is a situation to keep an eye on as the mercato progresses.

Rüdiger swoop on the cards?

The final name in the trio of central defenders linked with Inter is Stuttgart man Antonio Rüdiger.

A powerful and pacey defender, he has drawn the eye of teams in the Premier League, namely Chelsea and West Ham, as he continues to impress for club and country.

Despite a season in which he has struggled with injury, the 22-year-old has provided plenty of reason to suspect and incoming bid, and with Stuttgart floundering at the wrong end of the table they may see it as the right time to cash in on their young star.

Similar to Abdennour, there is no indication of a formal bid as of yet, although it would seem surprising if the Nerazzurri weren't one of the many teams keeping an eye on the developments of Rüdiger.
