Three times Ballon d’Or winner Johan Cruyff has recently hit out at the Barcelona board according to Mundo Deportivo stating that -

"When Laporta was the president, he left those who knew football like Txiki Begiristain, Frank Rijkaard and then Pep to make the footballing decisions. Everyone can make mistakes, but he knew football motivated their decisions and Laporta was dedicated to being the president and protecting them. That's why it worked. There were good and bad moments, but overall it was a great step for both sides."

The Dutchman also said -

"The best thing for Barcelona is for Guardiola to come back. If Joan Laporta became president again I'd say that the best thing to do is to sign Pep, and as an intelligent person, I'm sure he would. Those who know what to do are not the decision makers; it's those who want to take advantage of the football business.”

Whilst the initial title suggests that Cruyff is criticising current Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino the reality is a lot different. He is not blaming the players or the manager for their recent shortcomings such as failing to reach the Champions League semi-finals or winning just one game in their last four but rather the board. Cruyff sees that the only way Barcelona can become the best club in the world again is for his pupil of sorts, Pep Guardiola to return again.

According to Marca in 2013 Guardiola said -

"Throughout my career I've simply tried to instil what I learned from Johan Cruyff. He has had the biggest influence on football out of anyone in the world, first as a player and then as a coach. He taught me a lot and you can see that in the fact that so many of his former players are now coaches, because he made sure his love for the sport got through to us. He's very special to us."

As a manager at the club Cruyff was very successful, winning 11 trophies including the 1992 Champions league which was Spain and Barcelona's first since 1966. Whether Barcelona heed his warning is a different matter, Guardiola himself doesn't look likely to move after comfortably winning the Bundesliga title in his first season whilst also still being in contention for the Champions League.
