Real Madrid

Casillas - 8

Commanded his box very well, winning balls from crosses and corners. He also made an incredible save from Gotze's shot but other than that didn't have much to do in the way of shot stopping. A test of concentration and nerve in which he succeeded, a brilliant performance from the Spanish number one.

Carvajal - 8

Dealt extremely well with Ribery and Alaba down the left hand side in the first half and carried this performance on into the second half. The last 45 allowed him to get forward more and he was very deadly on the break, running at Bayern with pace and intent.

Pepe - 8

A strong showing from Pepe, dominant in the air whilst staying compact and diligent in defence, he also held his line very well. A hamstring injury ended his night short but a showing to be proud of from the Portuguese international.

Ramos - 8

Strong in the air like his partner Pepe and dominated the back line keeping it in check throughout the night. A big plus was that he managed to not get a yellow card which allows him to play in the next leg at the Allianz Arena, an important player for Madrid as always.

Coentrao - 8

A brilliant start saw him create a few clear chances, one in particular paid off with a great assist to Benzema for the first and only goal of the night. Dealt with the Robben and  Lahm overlap as well as anyone could have

Alonso - 8

Made some important blocks and clearances from set pieces, most notably stopping Muller in the dying minutes, a certain goal scoring chance which he helped to prevent. He was also key to creating chances from the back urging players forward and picking out decisive passes, a very strong showing from the Madrid general.

Modric - 9 (Man of the match)

The Croatian maestro played some incredible through balls, helped out defensively and showed composure on the ball all at the right times. He picked out the right passes and knew when to hold onto the ball and when to release it, ticking the clock down towards the end of the game with his runs into the corner.

Isco - 6

Some excellent delivery into the box, but very inconsitent as other times it was very poor. He seemed to be caught in two minds a lot of the time, which led to a few poor decisions, i.e. fouling opponents in dangerous areas.

Di Maria - 6

The Argentine missed a big chance just 5 minutes from half time, which needed to be taken, the boost it would have given the team would have been massive and would have spurred them on. His final ball and end product left a lot to be desired tonight which is usually his strong point. However he had a tenacious work rate throughout which is what's needed against sides like Bayern who keep possession for long spells.

Benzema - 7

As a striker you can't ask for much more than a goal. He held up the ball up very well, laying it off to the midfield or wingers multiple times, but in some cases was wasteful trying fancy flicks where firm passes were needed.

Ronaldo - 7

The star of Madrid wasn't 100% fit but still affected the game with a brilliant through ball to Coentrao for the first goal. He tested Neur 5 times throughout his time on the pitch but made just 16 touches in the whole game.

Substitutes:

Raphael Varane - 7

The young Frenchman slipped in this role with ease, picking up where Pepe left off winning his duels against the Bayern attack.

Gareth Bale - 6

Like Ronaldo, Bale too wasn't 100% fit hence why he started on the bench. He still impacted the game when he came on though beating Boateng on multiple occasions to put crosses in and he was direct using his pace to his advantage as you would expect. However although he put crosses in they rarely found their man and so gave Bayern back the possession a lot, something which wasn't needed.

Illaramendi - 6

Didn't do anything noticeable, but helped like Modric to tick down the minutes, playing simple passes and making tackles when needed.

Bayern Munich

Neuer - 6

Ronaldo tested him a few times with some powerful shots and wasn't really to fault for the Benzema goal as it was a tap in.

Rafinha - 6

Didn't do much in the way of stopping the first goal as he was out of position, but played okay. The obvious switch came later on in the game where he was subbed off and Lahm filled his spot.

Dante - 6

Should have stayed in the middle to mark Benzema for the first goal instead of following Boateng to try and intercept Coentrao's cross, a mistake from either centre back cost Bayern the game.

Boateng - 6

Lost his man Coentrao to concede the first goal as he wasn't tight enough to him. He also struggled with the penetrating runs in behind him, which caused them a lot of problems at times. His distribution of the ball was good though, with a 100% passing accuracy in the first half.

Alaba - 6

An average performance from the young Austrian, some strong runs but ultimately no end product a strong theme throughout the Bayern side.

Lahm - 7

Always involved within the game even when he moved to right back, but didn't have that cutting edge to create something. He kept Bayern ticking along with Kroos playing the simple balls, to get the more creative minded players involved.

Schweinsteiger - 6

The big German wasn't particularly impressive, he played further forward tonight but didn't create as much as was expected from the more advanced role. The number 10 responsibilities don’t suit him and it affected Bayern’s ability to counter.

Robben – 7

As always a constant threat running at the Madrid defence, bringing a lot of fouls onto himself which allowed Bayern their deadly costless kicks. His end product however was poor, weak shots and at times should have played to team mates instead of running himself.

Kroos - 7

Completed 65/66 passes in the first half, helping along with Lahm to keep things ticking over for Bayern.

Ribéry - 5

Very quiet, shown by his substitution, a below par showing from the Frenchman completing just one of three attempted take ons.

Mandzukic - 6

Mandzukic won some important headers (5/8) to set up his team mates but ultimately lacked any sort of threat towards goal himself. Many times in the first half he wasn't where he needed to be as he had dropped deeper to help defend.

Substitutes:

Javi Martinez - 6

The big Spaniard completed 16/16 passes when he came on and made 2/2 tackles but failed to make a difference, no impact came of his being on the pitch.

Mario Gotze - 6

The youngster had a very good chance but squandered it with a shot straight at Casillas, but other than that was quiet. He couldn't get his team playing which he is so used to doing, lacking the creative spark he is famous for.

Thomas Muller - 7

Created chances when he came on which Bayern lacked for large parts of the game, most notably his pass to Gotze which resulted in a great save. Missed a big chance however right in front of goal in the dying minutes of the game, a smart passage of play went to waste after he slipped.
