Real Sociedad have announced a preliminary agreement with Eredivisie side SC Heerenveen to sign Icelandic striker Alfreð Finnbogason. The 25-year-old will sign a four-year deal, keeping him at the club until 2018. No fee has been announced by either club as of yet.

Finnbogason enjoyed a highly successful time at Heerenveen, scoring 53 goals in 62 league appearances for the side, including 29 in the 2013-14 season, making him the top goalscorer. These goals helped Heerenveen to a fifth placed finish, while the player created a new record in being the first Icelandic player to score more than 25 goals in a single league season in a top division. He hasn't been able to replicate club form for his nation however, scoring just four time in 21 games for Iceland.

The signing comes at a time when a flurry of players are expected to leave the Basque side, with Antoine Griezmann and Haris Seferovic expected to leave the club over the summer, following in the footsteps of Claudio Bravo, who signed for FC Barcelona last week. It is likely that Finnbogason will form a partnership with Carlos Vela, who was bought out of his Arsenal clause and signed a four-year contract with the club.
