Fierce city rivals Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid face off in the Supercopa de España first leg on Tuesday night. The winners of La Liga for the first time in almost 20 years, Atléti, come up against the Copa del Rey and Champions League winners for the first time in the competition's history. Despite Real playing in 13 of these finals, and Atlético Madrid playing in five, the sides have never once come up against one another in the tournament's 32-year history.

  • Atlético Madrid 2-2 Real Madrid (La Liga 2013/14)

Real and Atléti faced each other five times in all competitions last season, with Carlo Ancelotti's side having won three, drawn one and lost one. The biggest and most important win for Real against their rivals was undoubtedly the Champions League final, where, after a very late equaliser from Sergio RamosLos Blancos won the game with a convincing 4-1 scoreline after extra time.

Team News (Real Madrid)

Carlo Ancelotti has already announced his 22-man squad for the Supercopa, leaving the squad the same as he did for the UEFA Super Cup last week. This means another opportunity to impress for £63million man James Rodríguez, as well as Toni Kroos, both of whom impressed in the 2-0 win against Sevilla last week.

There is no hugely concerning injuries for Ancelotti to be troubled by, though Gareth Bale and Pepe may be forced to sit out the first leg on Tuesday. Both only made the bench for Real's last pre-season friendly on Saturday, where they lost 2-1 to Fiorentina. Raphaël Varane, who has been linked with a move away from the club, is expected to start in defence, whilst Isco, whose girlfriend recently gave birth to their first child, could be the player to replace Gareth Bale if he is not fit.

Team News (Atlético Madrid)

The biggest blow to Atléti's chances is that they will be without influential midfielder Arda Turan, who suffered an injury to his right thigh. An advantage is that they have made several signings to replace those who have departed. With Diego Costa, Filipe Luis and Thibaut Courtois all going to Chelsea, Courtois returning after a three-year loan spell at Atléti, Diego Simeone has spent the money wisely.

The game is a chance for the likes of Mario Mandžukić, Antoine Griezmann and Jan Oblak to make their competitive debuts for the club. Raúl Jiménez, who signed from Club America last week, may also be given a chance, having played his first game in a pre-season competition against Serie A side Sampdoria.

Encounters between Real and Atlético Madrid have rarely been short of goals, and with a return leg on Friday, both sides will be looking to make the best of the first match at the Bernebau on Tuesday night. In a game bound to be flooded with debutants, it'll be Atléti with more to prove, having lost so many key players after their title victory last season.
