And that concludes VAVEL's coverage of the UEFA Super Cup. Thank you for following the whole 120 minutes. What an exciting game it proved to be, with six goals in total. That sets up the 2018-19 European season very well.

Captain Godin raises the trophy high above his head and the confetti sprays above the Atletico players! Simeone and his men will certainly be celebrating tonight as the first European trophy of the season has been decided.

And now the Atletico players head up to get their medals and trophy. Smiles all around for their players, in contrast to their dejected opponents.

Real Madrid now come up to collect their silver medals. This is an unfamiliar feeling for them having been serial winners for so long.

The team of officials had a great evening tonight. They are heading onto UEFA's stage to collect their medals now.

Atletico's players are triumphant on the pitch, where they have been joined by their manager. They had a big summer, spending big money on the likes of Lemar, and finished ahead of Real Madrid in the league last season. This could be the start of a special season for them.

Real Madrid might be forced into the transfer market in the coming weeks with the Spanish window open until the end of the month. Their La Liga campaign begins on Sunday against Getafe, while Atletico head to Valencia on Monday.

Lopetegui has not got off to the best start as Real Madrid boss, as his side looked like they missed Ronaldo tonight. Credit to Atletico, though, who scored at important times and took their chances.

Atletico Madrid were the worthy winners on the night. They began the game the stronger, and apart from a period towards the end of the first half when Real looked ominous, they were largely resolute.

FULL-TIME! Atletico Madrid are the UEFA Super Cup champions in 2018!

120+1' Bale takes a Real Madrid corner and again it is headed clear emphatically.

120' Real continue to put crosses into the Atletico box, but that is exactly what Godin and Savic thrive on. Time is very nearly up. One minute has been added on.

118' Oblak takes a cross put in by Carvajal. This one had far less quality on it and the seconds are ticking away.

117' Marcelo this time volleys in a quality cross for Ramos to attack, but Atletico are strong once again in clearing their lines.

115' Real Madrid look bereft of ideas and resigned to defeat. The post-Ronaldo era has not got off to a very good start, with Atletico five minutes away from winning their seventh trophy under Simeone.

114' Carvajal plays in a dangerous cross, which is well cleared by Godin. The ball falls for Modric to strike, but Oblak gets down and puts his body behind the ball.

112' Marcelo plays a tired pass and loses possession. Ramos is then booked for a cynical bodycheck on Saul, who goes down winded.

111' Vitolo turns Carvajal inside then out, and almost gets fouled inside the area, but he cannot get a shot away and Real survive.

110' Bale loops in a cross but it needed more pace and direction than that to trouble Atletico. Real Madrid are struggling to create much.

SUB: Gimenez replaces Costa, who has been substituted before he was sent off. A sensible change from Simeone.

108' Correa is brought down by Ramos, whose challenge was clumsy.

107' Correa found Vitolo in acres of space on the edge of the penalty area, but his touch let him down.

106' The second half of the additional half-hour is underway. Ceballos drives at the Atletico defence, but they survive. Partey is then fouled on the halfway line.

Atletico still have one substitute remaining which they could use in this second period of extra-time to tick down the clock a little more.

Simeone's team are 15 minutes from glory. Real Madrid did not concede four times in one game at all under Zinedine Zidane, but have now in their first game under Lopetegui. They were poor to start the game, but got back into it; now they have a mountain to climb once again.

HALF-TIME IN EXTRA-TIME. The referee calls time on the first period. Costa was again involved in an altercation just then, this time with Carvajal. He is treading a fine line.

105+2' Correa is booked for not being the required distance back from a free-kick. Partey then broke away but could not keep his feet.

105' Atletico have been clinical in extra-time and have a two-goal cushion. Who saw that coming?

GOAL! It's 4-2 to Atletico! Koke with a great finish after a wonderful move. Costa bullies Carvajal on the left, passes to Vitolo, who sets up Koke to place it in the corner.

103' Benzema looks to latch onto a through-ball, but Oblak is alert and collects.

SUB: Mayoral replaces Kroos for Real, who need a fast response.

101' Hernandez is fouled by Modric, who picks up a booking for the foul. Nothing much in that.

GOAL! Atletico lead through a Saul rocket! That was an incredible strike, teed up by Partey the substitute. Varane loses possession on the edge of his own box, Partey crosses, and Saul connects perfectly.

97' A cross from Marcelo is wildly overhit and it goes all the way out for a throw-in.

96' Madrid look the more lively at the moment, but Atletico are resolute so far.

95' Marcelo wins a corner off Juanfran. Benzema looks to tee up a teammate, but Godin clears.

92' Correa goes down very easily under limited contact. The referee rightly waves away any Atletico claims for a free-kick.

91' We are back underway for the first half of extra-time. Both sides have made three changes so far, but have one more at their disposal now we have an additional period.

FULL-TIME! We are heading for extra-time in Estonia.

90+3' Almost from Marcelo! Bale's cross finds him in the middle, but his acrobatic effort has no power on it.

90+1' Ceballos is booked for a late challenge on Correa.

SUB: Partey replaces Lemar. There will be three added minutes.

89' Vasquez looks to come inside, but his touch is heavy and he loses out. At the other end, Costa looks to shoot, but is forced wide.

87' Both teams have tired in the last few minutes. Neither side look like they want to face extra-time as the pace of the match has gone almost to a standstill.

86' Modric fouls Koke in Atletico's half. We are edging closer to having an additional half an hour to decide this game.

84' Vasquez's first touch wins Real a corner, which Modric takes. Bale is penalised for a push in the middle, though, and the referee awards Atletico a free-kick.

SUB: Lucas Vasquez replaces Isco.

81' Costa is caught offside and is angry again. He is never far from an argument but is already on a yellow card so thinks better of unleashing any more wrath.

80' Extra-time looms unless we have another goal here. Modric almost plays in Bale, but the Croat's pass was not quite in tune with the winger's run.

GOAL! Costa again! Clinical from close range. Marcelo kept the ball in play, only for Juanfran to find Correa, who puts it into the six-yard box, and Costa is there to poke home.

78' Juanfran and Correa look to combine on the right-hand side, but the return pass is overhit and runs out for a goal kick. Time is running out for the men in red and white stripes.

SUB: Ceballos replaces Casemiro, who has picked up a knock.

75' Almost some confusion at the back for Oblak and Godin, as the goalkeeper's clearance rebounds of his defender's head. Atletico get away with it.

73' Lemar has switched to a number ten role, and he finds Juanfran, who in turn finds Correa. The Argentine's cross goes too close to Navas.

SUB: Vitolo comes on for Rodri as Atletico search for a goal.

71' Real work a short corner, leading to Varane shooting at goal. Saul gets his head in the way to block the goalbound effort and then Modric curls over the top.

70' Bale and Benzema combine with real speed to win a corner. Great play from Bale in particular, there.

69' Lemar is fouled by Casemiro. Atletico have just over 20 minutes plus stoppage time to find an equaliser.

68' Real have really stepped it up since Modric entered the field. White shirts are swarming over Atletico's players, and they are keeping the ball really effectively.

66' Benzema shoots low from an angle and Oblak makes a simple save.

65' Ramos goes down under the challenge of Costa, and is not happy. He caught him in the head as he fell to the floor. Costa has been booked and has to be careful.

GOAL! The spot kick is converted by Ramos, who sent Oblak the wrong way with his stuttering run up. Real lead 2-1.

PENALTY TO REAL MADRID! Handball is given. Juanfran is the man with his arm in the air, and the referee gets it spot on. Costa is booked for dissent.

61' Correa is very harshly cautioned for a foul on Casemiro, before Bale has a glimpse of the goal. The Welshman took the ball on his chest but it just would not sit down for him to strike.

60' Savic makes a crucial interception to block Benzema from getting on the end of a promising pass from Marcelo.

59' Juanfran swings in a cross towards Costa, but Varane gets a vital touch on the ball to head clear.

SUBS: Asensio is replaced by Modric. Correa comes on for Griezmann. Both of the withdrawn players have been far from their best this evening.

56' Griezmann's ball in is poor and Real Madrid can regain possession with ease.

55' Handball is given against Casemiro. Atletico have the chance to swing in a cross.

54' Marcelo is carded for a foul on Juanfran. He was a little late in the tackle, but Juanfran made the most of it.

53' Modric is preparing to enter the field. Neither side has really stamped their authority on the game since the restart.

51' Asensio goes down under the challenge of Savic, but the referee is having none of it. The winger went down too easily.

49' Griezmann again makes a poor decision. He could have set Koke in but chose to shoot from distance and his effort was easily blocked. He, of course, had less time off after winning the World Cup, and is yet to get back up to speed.

48' Kroos is fouled by Juanfran. Benzema is offside from the resulting free-kick.

47' Griezmann looks to set Costa through but Varane intercepts. A better ball from the Frenchman would have given Costa a one-v-one with Navas.

46' Atletico regain possession and have a sustained period with the ball.

KICK-OFF. The second period is underway with no half-time changes from either team. Can we find a winner before the end of normal time?

Whoever can step it up again after the break is likely to score the next goal, which could be crucial to deciding who wins this battle. Stay with us, with the second half coming up shortly.

It could be that Modric is required off the bench to give Real some more midfield control, or Gelson Martins for Atletico to give them a little more pace in the final third. Lemar has been sporadic in his involvement so far, and he will want to up that, while Real are unlikely to start the second half as slowly as they started the first half.

Atletico will be disappointed not to be leading at half-time, while Real were let off the hook for a poor first quarter.

45+1' Costa has a chance to counter-attack but miscontrols, and that is it for the first half.

45' Kroos presses high up the field, but concedes a foul. There will be one added minute.

44' Atletico have steadied the ship again as we head towards the interval. They started much the brighter and took a very early lead, but Real have come back into the game. It's sure to be an intriguing second half.

42' Lemar and Griezmann look to link up, but Varane hooks clear.

41' Koke gets to the byline and swings in a low cross, but Navas collects easily.

39' Bale comes inside and shoots from distance, but Oblak can stand and watch it drift a couple of yards wide of the target.

38' Asensio concedes possession near his own penalty area, and Casemiro intercepts to give Atletico a corner. It has not been the best few minutes for the Spanish international.

35' Costa counters and wins a foul from Asensio, who goes into the book. Real felt that Isco had been fouled earlier on outside the Atletico box, but the Polish referee said he went down too easily.

34' Atletico do have a short period of play, but then Bale breaks away. He finds Asensio who has a chance to shoot, but opts to cut back onto his left foot and the chance is gone.

32' Excellent spell of possession for Los Blancos, before Marcelo lets the ball slide under his foot and go out for a throw-in. Atletico need to get hold of the ball for a spell, otherwise they could somehow find themselves behind having been dominant for the first 20 minutes.

30' Bale knocks the ball through the legs of Hernandez by the touchline and wins a free-kick. Real suddenly look confident; the goal has made a huge difference.

29' Asensio shoots inches wide! The winger got past Lemar and drove inside, and then bent a shot just past the post. What a turnaround in the game!

27' After saying how resolute Atletico are at the back, that was uncharacteristically poor defending. Simeone, still serving a touchline ban, will be furious.

GOAL! Bale drifts past his marker and swings in a cross which Benzema heads in from inside the six-yard box.

25' Atletico have settled into their solid defensive formation with Real simply passing the ball around in front of them. Marcelo then shoots over from 30 yards. It's going to take something special to break them down.

23' Varane's poor touch sees Costa steal possession from him. Lopetegui looks concerned on the sideline, and rightly so - Real just have not got going so far.

21' Bale is down for a short time having been fouled by Hernandez. Benzema then fouls Lemar.

19' The game is back underway with Real looking for Benzema again, but he is crowded out.

18' Ramos is down with a head injury after clashing with Costa. You suspect that might be a theme that develops as the evening unfolds.

16' Benzema almost squeezes his way through but is crowded out. Oblak then produces an exceptional save to deny Asensio, who had flicked on Marcelo's low cross from close range.

15' Koke is fouled but Lemar hits the set-piece out for a goal kick.

13' Bale chops past Koke and wins a free-kick in a wide area. Kroos can swing one in, but it is comfortable for Saul, who gets a strong header clear.

12' Real get their first spell of possession in the match, but Marcelo's cross at the end of it is calmly chested back to Oblak by Godin.

10' Bale and Asensio have not got into the game at all this evening so far. It is still early in the match but Real are missing Modric.

8' Lemar tracks back and helps prevent Isco crossing into a dangerous area. Rodri then clears upfield, and Ramos fouls Costa as the ball is in the air.

6' Saul chases down Varane and concedes a throw-in. Atletico are fired up for this, there is no doubt about that. Real are struggling to get out, and just as they do, Bale fouls Hernandez.

5' The corner kick comes to nothing, but Atletico have Real penned in. The danger has not passed yet.

4' Juanfran wins a corner off Ramos. Atletico have started very well here.

3' Real Madrid now have to react to falling behind after less than a minute. Costa's goal is the fastest ever scored in a UEFA Super Cup final.

GOAL! Diego Costa has opened the scoring already! 52 seconds on the clock and Atletico lead. The Spaniard beat Ramos in the air and then fired in from a narrow angle into the top corner.

KICK-OFF! It is Atletico who get the game underway.

Less than five minutes to go until the game begins, now, and the players emerge from the tunnel in Tallinn.

The players are out on the pitch warming up, and kick-off is fast approaching. Stay tuned for all the match updates as they happen.

Norwegian teenager Martin Ødegaard, signed from Strømsgodset at the age of 16, is also missing from the squad having featured sporadically during pre-season, with widespread reports suggesting that he is set for a loan move to the Championship

Thibaut Courtois, the former Atletico man, was not registered in time for Real Madrid, hence why he is not included in the matchday squad. The goalkeeper will have to wait to make his debut when Real begin their La Liga campaign against Getafe on Sunday as they aim to take the title back from Barcelona

Diego Simeone, though, has put Griezmann straight in from the start. Savic wins the race to partner Godin, who signed a new contract last week, at centre-half.

Julen Lopetegui opts for the line-up we expected, then, as Modric is left on the bench, with Bale and Asensio offering width and Isco playing in the midfield.

Atletico Madrid subs: Adan, Alex, Felipe Luis, Arias, Gimenez, Thomas, Gelson, Vitolo, Olabe, Kalinic, Correa

Atletico Madrid starting XI: Oblak, Juanfran, Savic, Godin, Hernandez, Saul, Koke, Rodri, Lemar, Costa, Griezmann

Real Madrid subs: Casilla, Lunin, Nacho, Modric, Lucas Vasquez, Llorente, Mayoral, Ceballos, Valverde, Vinicius Jr, Reguilon, Sanchez

Real Madrid starting XI: Navas, Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo, Kroos, Casemiro, Isco, Bale, Benzema, Asensio

Kick-off is just over an hour away and team news is beginning to filter through...

The game gets underway at 8pm UK time, and team news will be with you as soon as we have it.

The match promises to be an intriguing watch between Europe's most prominent defence in Atletico, and some of the most high-profile attacking names for Real

Gelson Martins and Nikola Kalinic, Atletico's other two summer signings, could also make their competitive debuts. Kalinic was meant to be with Croatia during their World Cup campaign but was sent home during the group stages without playing a single minute having refused to come on as a substitute, claiming he was injured.

For Atletico, Antoine Griezmann and Lucas Hernandez, fresh from winning the World Cup with France, are expected to begin the game on the bench, although fellow Frenchman Thomas Lemar, who signed from AS Monaco during the summer, could start, having returned from holiday two weeks earlier than required in a bid to hit the ground running.

New signing Thibaut Courtois, who arrived from Chelsea, could make his Real Madrid debut, although Keylor Navas is favourite to start the game with the Belgian having only just arrived.

Croatian World Cup star Luka Modric has only played around a quarter of an hour during pre-season and is expected to be left on the bench by Julen Lopetegui. Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale have all taken a full part in pre-season and are expected to line up as Real's front three.

Real Madrid beat Liverpool in the Champions League final in May, while Atletico Madrid overcame Marseille to win the Europa League, having beaten Arsenal in the semi-final.
