Villarreal have announced the signing of Joel Campbell, subject to the completion of a medical examination. The Costa Rica international has signed with Marcelino's side on a loan deal until the end of the season, despite reported interest from numerous other clubs.

According to Spanish press, Real Sociedad were also keen on the forward, as David Moyes looks to lessen the goalscoring burden placed on the shoulders of Carlos Vela.

Campbell is certainly no stranger to Spanish football, having spent a season on loan at Real Betis from 2012 to 2013. However his stint with Betis was unsuccessful as he scored just two goals in 33 total appearances.

Since then he has matured and developed. Last season he was a key player for Olympiacos, scoring 11 goals as they lifted the Greek Super League once again.

He then fully announced himself to world football. He was handed the task of spearheading Costa Rica's attack during the World Cup in Brazil. Costa Rica went on to progress to the knockout stages before they were knocked out on penalties by the Netherlands.

It is a case of one in and one out for both clubs, as Villarreal also announced that a deal in principle has been agreed for the sale of Brazilian centre-back, Gabriel, to Arsenal. You can read more about that deal here.
