Real Madrid's Luka Modrić has been ruled out for six weeks with a knee ligament injury, a blow which will almost certainly keep the Croatian out for the remainder of the Spanish season. The 29-year-old was forced from the field during Madrid's 3-1 win over Málaga on Saturday, and a club statement has now confirmed that Modrić is unlikely to see any action for the rest of the season.

"Following tests on Luka Modrić at the Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital by Real Madrid’s medical services, the player has been diagnosed with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee," reads the statement on the club's official website.

With Los Blancos' last definite fixture of the season coming against Getafe on the 24th of May, the only way that Modrić is likely to return would appear to be if Madrid reach a second successive UEFA Champions League Final.

In any case, his involvement in a match of such magnitude would be doubtful following a lengthy spell on the sidelines, meaning he is unlikely to step back onto the pitch until the 2015-16 season. Meanwhile, manager Carlo Ancelotti is also left waiting for the results of scans on star winger Gareth Bale, with the Welshman feared to have sustained a tear to his left calf muscle.
