Atlético Madrid have announced that young midfielder Saúl Ñíguez has signed a new five-year contract with the Spanish champions.

The club confirmed on their official website that 20-year-old Saúl has extended his contract until the summer of 2020, adding an extra year onto his existing deal.

“Saúl has made his way through our youth system from the Under-12s to make the first team squad, where this season he has consolidated his position by making 32 appearances and scoring four goals,” read an official statement on Atlético's website.

The midfielder made his debut for Los Rojiblancos in 2013 as a substitute for fellow academy graduate Koke, who has reportedly been made the primary summer transfer target for José Mourinho's Chelsea.

“I've worked to try to achieve a renewal and be here for many years," Saúl declared. "That's what I've been working for since I started playing in the ranks.

"My intention is to stay here and that can be seen in my renewal. I'm thankful to the coach above all, who was the one to make me debut and has given me confidence.

"My hope is to play as many games as possible and be with Atleti for many years to come.”

Having spent last year on loan with Rayo Vallecano, Saúl has returned to the Vicente Calderón this season as an important part of Diego Simeone's squad, scoring an overhead kick in a famous 4-0 win over Real Madrid in February.

He has represented Spain at every youth level, and is currently captain of La Roja's Under-21 side.
