Atletico Madrid will be looking to continue their excellent start to the season when they host Getafe in the league on Wednesday.

Atletico’s excellent start

Diego Simeone’s side have very much hit the ground running at the beginning of the La Liga season with four victories in their opening five matches in all competitions especially in their defence with two goals in their opening four.

Bounce back

They continued their return to form at the weekend after they suffered their first defeat of the campaign the previous weekend with a narrow 2-1 defeat to champions Barcelona.

They pulled off an impressive midweek victory in their opening match of their group stage of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Galatasaray and topped that off on Saturday with goals from Angel Correra and Fernando Torres giving them another 2-0 victory over Eibar to take them up to fifth in the table.

They will be looking for victory here as Simeone’s side face a tough 12 days with matches against Villarreal, Benfica and Real Madrid.

Getafe’s difficult start

After a poor finishing last season with their 15th placed position been one of the worst since Getafe’s promotion back in the 2003-04 season and it hasn’t improved since then with three consecutive defeats in their opening three of the season with defeats to Espanyol, Granada and Athletic Club.

They managed to avoid a fourth defeat in a row last weakened when Stefan Scepovic’s early effort gave them an impressive 1-0 win over Malaga.

Despite their win they have only scored three in their opening four, half the amount of their opponents. Three points here in general could prove difficult if their form away from home last season is anything to go by losing 13 of their 19.

Team news

Madrid will be without their winger Koke who sustained a hamstring injury in their win over Eibar and isn’t expected to return until the end of the October. Torres and Correra are expected to be rewarded with a start here after their heroics at the weekend from the substitute’s bench.

The visitors will still be without Karim Yoda who still hasn’t played since March after he teared his patellar tendon, Roberto Lago is also a doubt after limping off in the second half against Malaga. Atletico loanee Emiliano Velazquez who has been a staple in their defence is expected to keep his place against his parent club.

Atletico Madrid will host Getafe on Tuesday, September 22 with kick off at 7:00PM BST.
