On Sunday afternoon both Madrid teams Atletico and Real faced each other at Vicente Calderón and Altetico Madrid's players can be happy to get one point with a late goal by Luciano Vietto.

Real Madrid takes an early lead

Atletico's fans pushed their team with a fantastic choreo and they generated a special atmosphere at the start of derby madrileño. Referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco blew the starting whistle punctually and both teams started calmly and took their time to look what the opponent would do.

The first chance of this game went on Real's account, a cross from Luka Modric found Cristiano Ronaldo in Atletico's penalty area, but his header went close but did not bother Jan Oblak. Atletico had the first chance in the fifth minute, but Angel Correa's shot didn't find Keylor Navas' goal, because the ankle was to small and so the Costa Rican had no problems.

With not even ten minutes off the clock, Real took the early lead. Dani Carvajal made a fantastic run on the right wing and hit a cross towards the middle of the area where Karim Benzema did not have a defender on him in the box and so the Frenchman easily headed in the b.

Correra didn't care about the early lead for Real Madrid and he showed a lot of self-confidence and shot twice on Navas' goal, but the goalkeeper saved both of the efforts.

Griezmann missed the penalty

In the 21th minute, Atletico Madrid got a penalty after Sergio Ramos tried to smooth his previous mistake out and hit Tiago in the penalty area and without delay referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco pointed on the penalty spot. Griezmann faced Navas and the Costa Rican saved the good shoted penalty and saved Real's lead.

After Griezmann's penalty both teams played as they began, well structured and look what the opponent do. Real Madrid controlled the ball almost 60% of the time and had more attempts at goal, but nothing noteworthy.

Halftime: Atletico Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid

The referee blowed his whistle and the players went into catacombs of the stadium and could regenerate for 15 minutes. The guests lead thanks to a goal by Karim Benzema from the 9th minute with 0-1.

Diego Simeone changed Oliver Torres with Yannick Ferreira-Carrasso to bring more offensive power in Atletico's play and the Belgian showed this only five minutes after his substitution, during an attack he assisted Fernando Torres, but Torres' shot was no danger for Navas. Also in the beginning of the second half, Atletico did more and Real prefered to defend, while playing on the counter.

Starting in the 60th minute the derby became a bit boring, both teams didn't real push to goal and it was more a passing battle, where the ball possession changed when a player played a bad pass. Also the atmosphere in Vicente Calderón disappeared, because of the performance on the pitch.

Late drama at the Calderon

Seven minutes before final whistle, Atletico Madrid scored against the run of play. Jackson Martinez hit a good shot from the left wing, Keylor Navas did not clear the ball away from danger and Luciano Vietto had an easy and score the late equaliser. Real Madrid got punished for their defensive play and must be pleased with a draw against local rival Ateltico and had to defend their goal with all men in the last seconds of the match.

Atletico Madrid is still in the fifth position after this derby, but for the team it is definitely a better feeling to draw against local rival Real Madrid. Despite starting the season in stuttering fashion, Atletico showed their quality in their attackiing third of the pitch and did not have enough luck to score the winner. Because of the equaliser against Atletico Madrid, Real could not get the top position in Primera División.
