Nuno Espirito Santo has resigned from his position as Valencia manager.

The 41-year-old revealed his decision in his pre-match press conference following the team's 1-0 defeat to Sevilla in La LigaLos Che ending the game with nine men as they suffered their fourth defeat of the season and slipped to ninth in the table.

The game was goalless at half time, but with João Cancelo dismissed after 35 minutes, it was to be only a matter of time until the visitors caved, with Sergio Escudero scoring the game's decisive goal five minutes after the restart.

That proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back as Nuno decided to call time on his Valencia stay, having been in charge for less than 18 months at the Mestalla.

Nuno reveals resignation

Speaking to the press after the Sevilla loss, Nuno stated that he had "taken the decision to leave the club" following discussions with the Valencia hierarchy prior to Sunday night's game, and further talks after it.

He revealed that he had "spoke with the president [and] with the owner, Peter Lim," both before and after the defeat, and that all agreed that "the situation is not good."

Thus, in order "to do the best for the club," the manager has decided to step down from his position, adding that it has been "an honour" to be their manager.

He concluded by thanking "all the players [he has] worked with," the owner and "the fans" for their support during his time in charge.

Disappointing start to the season

Nuno's resignation follows an under-whelming start to the campaign by Valencia.

He led the team to a tremendous fourth placed finish in La Liga last year, but has failed to live up to those standards again this campaign, with the team now ninth and on the brink of elimination from the Champions League group stages.

The club now have the difficult task of finding a new manager before their clash with Barcelona next weekend.
