WigGOLD

Team GB's Bradley Wiggins has won the gold medal after defeating Tony Martin and fellow team mate Chris Froome in today's individual time trial.

Bradley Wiggins started 2012 being an extraordinary cyclist, but nobody knew that he was made of gold. Today, seven months later, he has proclaimed himself as the most succesful british athlete in the olympics with seven medals. Four of them gold. But not only that, Wiggo has completed what possibly is the best season a cyclist could ever do with wins in Paris-Nice, Tour du Romandie, Critérium du Dauphiné and the mighty Tour of France. But that wasn't enough for Bradley Wiggins.

The Brit couldn't think of a better way to enhance his unforgetable season with a gold medal in the town where he grew up -although he was born in Belgium-. And after his Tour de France win, he was the favourite to do so. He took up time trial specialists like Fabian Cancellara, Tony Martin, or his team mate Chris Froome on the 44 kilometre circuit, which was completely flat and didn't have many technical difficulties. This was perfect for Wiggins, who flew since minute one, and won medal number eight for Great Britain in the London 2012 Olympics.

Tony Martin was the only man to keep up with Wiggins

Tony Martin, Fabian Cancellara, Tylor Phinney, Christopher Froome and Spain's Luis León Sánchez were the only men that had a chance to beat Wiggins in today's time trial. In fact, Martin stayed close to the Brit's times during the whole race. Fabian Cancellara, that won the competition in the Beijing Olympics back in 2008, had a tough fall in saturday's road race, this made the Swiss suffer during the whole time trial and finished in a discreet  seventh position.

American sensation Tylor Phinney, had a serious chance to pick up a medal in today's time trial, but the other Great Britain rider Chris Froome, second in this year's Tour de France, confirmed that he is in a great shape and took bronze from the twenty two year old american.

An other rider with serious options was Luis León Sánchez, but luck wasn't with him. The Spaniard's chain broke in the starting line and made him loose an unsavable amount of time, but he continued to race with the hope to achieve the top ten. When he was starting to increase his pace, Luis León sufferd from yet another technical fault and punctured his back wheel.

Wiggins dominated from start to finish But the thousands and thousands of spectators were there to see one man. Bradley Wiggins. The SKY rider, famous for his clean style on top of the bike, destroyed his competitor's times and entered the finishing line under the cheers of the Team GB's fans with a great mark of 50:39:54. No less than 42 seconds faster than silver medalist Tony Martin.

With this medal, Bradley Wiggins has made history and has proclaimed himself as the most succesful olympian in the country and the first British Tour de France winner in the same year. Two records that he will for sure increase in the coming years.
