Unbeaten middleweight Gennady Golovkin has insisted he would be willing to drop down to light-middleweight in order to face either Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao in one of the biggest fights of the year.

The 32-year-old Kazakh has developed into one of the greatest boxers on the planet with a string of devastating wins, which last saw the 5’10½” star overcome British middleweight Martin Murray in February.

With 32 wins from 32 fights, and an extraordinary 29 knockouts, Golovkin is admittedly yet to face a big-name opponent in a showdown. However, he is now prepared to step down in weight for a potential clash with either Mayweather or Pacquiao, who will finally face each other after years of preparation at MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 2.

Having recently visited Pacquaio prior to the fight, he now believes he can drop to the 154lb division while sustaining his power and ability – which is the highest weight class the two superstars have competed at during their careers.

When asked about a potential step down, he replied: “Absolutely, absolutely. [It’s] Not a lot of weight to lose, because I’m regular at 167. My last fight I was 58, three pounds is… I’m not a big guy. Look at me, I’m not big, I’m not strong, heavy. This is me after one month, relaxed, 167.”

Any changes in weight would also make Golovkin eligible to fight Mexican Saul Alvarez, who remains as one of American boxing’s hottest properties despite his points defeat at the hands of Mayweather back in 2013.

Golovkin is next scheduled to face Willie Monroe Jr in California on May 16, who currently holds an impressive record of 19 wins and 1 defeat.
