Boxing trainer Joe Gallagher has demanded Scott Quigg needs to answer regarding the Carl Frampton showdown within the next two weeks.

Discussions have been ongoing about a potential world title unification fight between Quigg and Frampton this year, but a battle between the super-bantamweights is yet to be agreed.

Nevertheless, Gallagher confirmed he had already begun preparation with Quigg, the current WBA champion, for the fight. While he seems eager to get the fight underway, he has admitted he may have to look for other possible opponents if a deal cannot be agreed with IBF king Frampton in the coming weeks.

Speaking about the potential fight – which was sparked following Frampton’s dominant victory over Chris Avalos in February – Gallagher said: “I want Scott Quigg to fight the end of May, beginning of June. He hasn’t fought since November. He’s ready to go then and I don’t want to wait for the beginning of next season for him to fight.

28-year-old Frampton remains unbeaten after 20 fights, all but six coming from knockouts. Quigg also remains unbeaten to date, with the 26-year-old boasting 30 wins and 2 draws. 22 of the Bury-born fighter’s victories have come through knockouts.

Gallagher continued: “We all want it to be the Carl Frampton fight. We’re already training for the Carl Frampton fight, but if it’s not going to be, we need to know in the next couple of weeks, because we have to start preparing against another quality opponent in the next 10 or 12 weeks.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn admitted negotiations are now reaching a critical period, as he hopes to stage another monumental clash, just days after announcing two title shots at the end of May.

“I think if there’s going to be a big summer fight we have to move quickly,” he said. “Talks are kind of ongoing, frustrating. They definitely want the fight, but we have to go through the right channels.

“I think two weeks is a realistic time frame. What Joe Gallagher is referring to is not signing in two weeks, or else. It’s from a training perspective, we want to make sure that within two weeks we know who our opponent is, so we can work on that opponent for the summer.”

Scott Quigg last beat Hidenori Otake on November 22 at the Echo Arena, Liverpool.
