The Scottish independence referendum has taken a controversial twist after police attended a counting centre in Glasgow.

Officers were called after allegations of electoral fraud surfaced.

The claims related to ten votes cast in the Glasgow area.

It is thought that polling station workers raised the alarm after several voters attempted to vote, finding that votes in their names had already been cast.

Police attended the count centre in order to seize the relevant papers as evidence.

There was also concern raised on social media after pictures of a 'Yes' paper on a 'No' sorting table appeared on a major television news channel.

However, the 'Yes Dundee' group, where the footage was filmed, later stated that the papers had not yet been officially sorted and would be moved in due course.

The turnout is expected to be one of the highest on record, with 97 per cent of the Scottish electorate registering to vote in the referendum.

The bulk of results are expected between 03:00 and 05:00, although early indications show the Better Together campaign has the upper hand.
