Michael Cheika has named a 40-man squad which will take part in The Rugby Championship, which begins for the Wallabies on July 18 when they take on South Africa in Brisbane.

Toulon duo given recalls

French-based players Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell have been recalled after the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) relaxed their eligibility rules, allowing players with over 60 Australian caps to be selected despite playing overseas.

The ARU's decision has allowed for the pair to pave their way back into international reckoning having not played for a couple of years, yet there is no recall for Wasps-bound flanker, and Australian legend, George Smith.

Head coach Chieka said, "We're fortunate enough to see some experience enter the squad from both Super Rugby and overseas.

"We will look to shave down the squad closer to Test week when we arrive in Brisbane to take on the Springboks."

Experienced props miss out

Benn Robinson and Ben Alexander have both been overlooked by Chieka for The Rugby Championship, which also puts their chances of making the Rugby World Cup in jeopardy.

Both with 72 caps to their name, the veteran props are alongside Karmichael Hunt and James O'Connor in terms of big names who have been left out.

Dean Mumm and Dave Dennis are back in the squad after a couple of years away from the setup.

Four uncapped faces in the squad

There are four names in Chieka's squad who are all in the running to get their first caps during the upcoming tournament.

Reds centre Samu Kerevi and Waratahs winger Taqele Naiyaravoro both stood out during the Super Rugby season and would be welcome additions to the Wallaby backline, with Rebels prop Toby Smith and Brumbies lock Rory Arnold completing the list of uncapped players.
