Argentina look good for a quarter-final spot, after scoring five tries in their 45-16 win over Tonga at the Leicester City Stadium

In a pulsating match, Nicolas Sanchez was at his mercurial best again, scoring 25 points on the day, including an excellent individual try.

Tonga played their part in what was one of the best games of the tournament, scoring two brilliant first half tries, but some errant goal kicking dented their hopes of a serious challenge.

Imhoff leads Puma first half charge

Underdogs Tonga started the game brilliantly, with a fifth minute try finished off by fly-half Kurt Morath after some excellent build-up play in the Argentinian half.

The fast-paced match was turned on its head midway through the first half, when Argentina scored 20 unanswered points after a number of breaks from their back three.

After a Sanchez penalty got them on the board, a well-worked move saw Joaquin Tuculet cross for a try, with star winger Juan Imhoff following him over the line two minutes later for a rampant Puma side.

A further Sanchez penalty extended the lead, before Tonga fought back thanks to a Morath penalty, which was followed by one of the tries of the tournament which was finished off by prop Soane Tonga'uiha after some expert wing play by Telusa Veainu

Pumas pull away to grab bonus point

With Diego Maradona in attendance, he and his fellow Argentinian supporters in attendance would have enjoyed vast amounts of the second-half performance.

After the sides shared penalties in the early moments of the second stanza, Argentina broke free in the final quarter of the match, adding three late tries against a weary Tongan side.

Firstly, Sanchez scythed through a gap to score, which was followed by the bonus-point confirming try eight minutes later through replacement hooker Julian Montoya

With the clock hitting 80 minutes, Santiago Cordero ran in under the posts to add the try his excellent performance deserved.

Argentina will be through to the knockout stages with a win in their final pool game against Namibia, whilst Tonga face New Zealand in their final encounter.
