In one of the most drawn-out rugby transfers of recent time, Bath Rugby have finally got their man, and announced the signing of Welsh international, Taulupe Faletau

Faletau will join the club next season, after his current contract with the Newport Gwent Dragons comes to an end.

The 24-year-old has been linked with Bath for nearly 12 months now, and there have been a number of times that the transfer was said to be dead in the water.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland said that he would not sanction the move whilst Faletau was under contract with the Welsh region, yet that position of power has now been taken away from him with Faletau's contract expiring in the summer.

'Gatland's Law' indicates that just two players who are playing outside of Wales will be granted eligibility to play for Wales, with the rest being selected from the four regions. Gatland is then allowed two wildcard selections for players playing outside of Wales, with Faletau now joining a list which includes George North, Luke Charetis and Jamie Roberts who would be eligible next season. There is certain wriggle-room within the law, and it would not be a surprise if all four of those players were in the Welsh squads for their international fixtures.

Faletau already has 52 international appearances despite his young age, which include three Six Nations titles, three World Cup knockout appearances as well as being a member of the successful 2013 British and Irish Lions tour.

Faletau thanks Dragons ahead of Bath move

After joining the Dragons in 2009, Faletau has gone from strength-to-strength and is now one of the best back row forwards in world rugby.

"I’d like to thank Dragons for everything they’ve done for me in my career."

Commenting on his move to England, Faletau said that Bath's attacking style was a big influence on his move, as well as linking up with a former coach.

"The way Bath approach the game suits my style of play, which was a big factor in me wanting to join,” said Faletau.

“The opportunity to work with Darren [Edwards, Bath Rugby First Team Coach] again after doing so with Wales U20 and the Dragons was also too good to turn down."

Ford says Faletau signing proof of Bath's lofty ambititons

After finally getting their man, Bath head coach Mike Ford hopes that the signing of Faletau proves just how ambitious the West Country club are.

"When we talk about this club being ambitious, we’re not just paying lip service: signing a player of Toby’s calibre is evidence of that", said Ford.

"He is a world-class player who never takes a backwards step and he will add competition to an equally fantastic back row."

Faletau joins a lengthening list of Welsh internationals who will be plying their trade at The Rec next season.

Dominic Day and Rhys Preistland are already at the club, with Faletau and Charteris having signed up to play in the blue, black and white from next season onwards.
