England head coach Eddie Jones has handed a recall to Northampton Saints flanker Tom Wood for the upcoming autumn Internationals.

With a number of injuries to second and back-rowers, Jones has named a much-changed squad from those that defeated Australia 3-0 in the summer.

England face South Africa, who they haven't defeated since 2006 to kickstart their autumn series, before further matches against Fiji, Argentina and Australia, all taking place at Twickenham.

Wood gains first call-up under Jones following injury-crisis

Having been ignored by Jones up to this point, the selection of Wood is a slightly surprising one. The Saints flanker was a huge part of Stuart Lancaster's team for a number of years which culminated in the disappointing 2015 World Cup campaign.

But amid injuries to James Haskell, Sam Jones, Maro Itoje, Jack Clifford, Sam Underhill and Mike Williams, Wood has been handed a place in the 33-man squad.

Jones admitted that he had spoken with Wood and that he was pleased with how the player has responded to being overlooked, commenting on his 'work-rate' as a big factor in his recall.

Gloucester duo Ben Morgan and Jonny May have also been handed recalls having missed much of 2016, with Bath lock Dave Attwood also back in the fold.

Hughes among six uncapped players for autumn Tests

Jones has included six uncapped players in his 33-man squad, with Fijian-born back-rower Nathan Hughes the standout name.

Having been a star for Wasps over the last couple of seasons, Hughes now qualifies for England on residency grounds and he gives Jones another back-row option considering all of the injuries to other back-rowers.

Sale full-back Mike Haley is also named in the senior squad for the first time, with Bath forward Charlie Ewels and Harlequins prop Kyle Sinckler also in line to make their international debuts.

Worcester centre Ben Te'o has overcome injury and could collect his first cap, as could Saracens fly-half Alex Lozowski who has been one of the standout players in the Aviva Premiership this season.
