Andy Murray has received a bye into the third round of the Shanghai Masters after his opponent Florian Mayer withdrew with a wrist injury.

Murray, targeting his third straight Shanghai title, will now play his first match on Thursday against either Alexander Dolgopolov or France's Gilles Simon.

Reflecting on the walkover, Murray said, "You never know whether it's a good or a bad thing,"

"Whoever I play now will have played two matches in these conditions. It may take a little while for me to adjust."

The British number one, who broke his Grand Slam duck at the US Open last month, added: "You just need to make sure you do enough preparation, stay sharp and come out playing well tomorrow."
