In an interesting match up in Germany, two Spanish speaking stars in Juan Monaco and Marcel Granollers took to the court for the day's opening match. Despite Granollers being the 2nd seed, Monaco completely outplayed him in a fairly routine win.

There were no struggles for top seed Phillip Kohlschreiber when he faced Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, as the German took just over an hour to complete the victory. Three of Kohlschreiber's four ATP World Tour titles have come in Germany, and he could be set for a 1st in Düsseldorf.

Twenty year old Czech Jiri Vesely knocked out former world no. 3 Nikolay Davydenko to reach his 1st ever quarter final at ATP level, whilst Italian Andreas Seppi reached a 2nd quarter final in 2014 after beating Adrian Marrarino in emphatic fashion.
