Sam Stosur became the first seeded player to be knocked out of this year's Wimbledon with a quick 6-3 6-4 loss to Belguim's Yanina Wickmayer in just 69 minutes. Stosur has never been past the third round at the All England Club, and dropped to a 8-11 record at the tournament. This disappointing result followed an encouraging performance at the French Open, where she lost in three sets in the fourth round to eventual champion Maria Sharapova.

For Wickmayer, the former world no.12, this was another impressive win over a top player - she also owns wins against former world no.1s Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic and Dinara Safina

Both players hit a good 25 winners and Stosur hit 9 more aces than her Belgian opponent. The place Wickmayer was able to get the better of her Australian opponent was in the second serve return - Stosur won just 35% of her second serves compared to 65% won by Wickmayer.

Stosur's poor Wimbledon record and Wickmayer's formerly high ranking will prevent this from being too much of an upset, but the Australian will still be bitterly disappointed with an early loss - particularly given her 13 aces and 25 winners against just 8 unforced errors. She now needs to regroup in time for the US Open, where she's a former champion.
