"This title is huge and it's one I will always remember."

Humble. Not an adjective often associated with Bernard Tomic. Yet his response (above) after winning the ATP 250 Claro Open in Bogota, Colombia, hints at a reformed Tomic, one who is ready to fulfil his potential.

His win over Ivo Karlovic in the final marks the second time he has raised the victor’s trophy in an ATP event, after claiming the Apia International in Sydney last year. The final was tough, a 2h16 three-setter, 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(4), in which Tomic was aced 39 times. That is coming off the back of a 2h50 semi-final played yesterday against Estrella Burgos. There is no sugar coating here – on paper Tomic had a straightforward path to winning the title: Dustov, Falla, an out-of-form Pospisil, Estrella Burgos and Karlovic. However, after all that the Australian has suffered in 2014, it is akin to winning a Grand Slam in that this is a kick start to bigger and better things – things that he is certainly capable of. There was a look of determination on the face of Tomic throughout the week, and one could only wish that the wind changed, leaving the sometimes lackadaisical youth with that look fixed permanently on him.

The Australian vaults back into the top 100, now ranked #70, and with few points to defend between now and the end of the season, a top 50 rank come 2015 is looking a decent proposition. The trick for Tomic will be to provide consistent performances for a whole year, to prove to both his home fans, and the tennis world as a whole, that he deserves the wraps placed on him as a teenager. The 21 year-old has plenty of time to make a career out of himself, and with the right guidance, mentality and good habits, he has success waiting for him. In the age of big hitters, tennis could certainly use his captivating game to break the mould, and be at the forefront of a new era.

Humble. Not an adjective often associated with Bernard Tomic. Yet it looks like the tide is (slowly) turning, and the waves of victory are beginning to roll in. Let’s hope this new Bernard Tomic can ride them to shore.
