So, after qualifying for the main draw, Heather Watson played her first round match in Montreal in the Rogers Cup.  She had drawn 19 year old qualifier Terez Smitcova.  Heather being the higher ranked player, should on paper have won this match.  She started off great and was soon up to a 2-0 lead.  However, she was unable to consolidate on this lead and was broken back.  It was soon back on serve and then 3-3.  She appeared in trouble as she was broken again to make the score 3-4, however she then seemed to step up a bit and broke back and then held to eventually take the set 6-4

Moving into the second set, this one started much the same for Heather and she was soon up 3-0, and then 4-1, and actually one point away from making it 5-1 and her to serve out for the match.  This is where Smitcova came back at her and Hev made quite a few errors, before we knew it the match was back at 5-5 with Heather to serve next.  That game didn't really go as planned! Heather was broken meaning that Smitcova was serving to level the match (which she did 5-7).  Heather really should have won this match in straight sets, she let that lead go.

Into the final deciding set, which was very tense and both players were getting tired by this point (over 2 hours already) and it was starting to show in their shots.  Heathers forehand decided to go AWOL for a while, but her backhand stood firm.  However, Smitcova was not allowing Heather shots on the backhand, so this match was giving the Brits a headache!  However, Hev did manage to keep hold of her serve meaning she just needed on game to win the match, this was going to be a tricky game though as it was on Smitcova's serve.  It didn't look like it was going to go her way, as Smitcova shot into a 30-0 lead, however Heather managed to get it back and then got to 30-40 and match point.  Smitcova saved that Match point, and got it to Deuce.  However on the next Match point, she was unable to stop Heather taking her chance.  This win not only takes Heather into round 2, but very close to breaking into the WTA top 40 - if she wins round 2 she will be in that ranking group.
