On day one of the US Open, 2012 champion Andy Murray was playing Robin Haase in what was a rematch of their 2011 meeting.  Scheduled as 2nd on Armstrong (a court that Andy has struggled on in previous years) it looked like the curse of the court was going to be a thing of the past.  Andy came out storming and took a 4-0 lead in the first set, Haase then broke back to make it 4-1 and held for 4-2.  Andy then held his serve for 5-2, then he served out the first set for 6-3.

The second set stayed with serve all the way to a tiebreak, with some chances for both players to break each other, but non were taken.  Andy shot out to a 4-1 lead in the tiebreak, and it was soon 5-3.  Haase managed to bring it back to 5-5 but Andy came through and won the tiebreaker.

Into the 3rd set and something appeared to happen to Andy, after winning his first service game, it all seemed to go wrong as Haase stepped things up a gear, or Andy dropped a gear, as this set went to Haase for the strange score of 6-1.  Andy was not looking good and seemed to be grasping parts of his body and asked for ice to be brought, as the weather conditions were intensely hot and humid.

Moving into the 4th set Haase called for a medical time out, as he was obviously injured too.  Andy though did not call for a trainer, but by this time he did have ice and was rubbing it on various parts of his legs etc that were troubling him.  It looked like it was going to be a repeat of their 2011 meeting when Andy found himself trailing 1-4.  Struggling to move, he somehow managed to break serve twice and hold out for 5-5.  Andy then managed to break again and found himself at 6-5 up in set 4, meaning he needed to serve the match out.  Having been struggling with his serve this set, it was looking difficult for him to do so, especially when Haase had break points to take it to another tiebreak.  Andy finally had match point, and managed to take it.  After the match it transpired that he had been suffering from cramp badly from set 3 up, but he fought on to win.

Moving onto Johanna Konta was playing her first round in the main draw as a direct entrant, against Shahar Peer.  The match was one that Johanna could win, and probably would have done had she managed more match practice time before this tournament.  Peer broke early and took the first set 6-2, not exactly the start Johanna wanted.  She did her best to step up in the second set and had several break point chances on the Peer serve, but was not able to convert any of them.  Peer was just better on the day and the second set went much the same way with Johanna losing 6-3 to end her run.
