The second semifinal of the Barcelona Open saw an all-Spanish affair between David Ferrer and Pablo Andujar. On paper it would seem that we would get the expected Ferrer vs Nishikori final as they were the top seeds left.

Andujar however, proved to be quite a formidable opponent and broke in the 7th game of the first set sealing his break with a nice volley bringing the score to 3-4. He held serve to bring the score to 4-all and was back in business.

Andujar had the opportunity to serve for the first set at 6-5 but couldn’t and ended up in a tiebreak. Things didn’t look so good at the start of the tiebreak for Andujar as Ferrer went up to 4-1 in no time, but Andujar persevered and went on to take the first set.

The second set saw a very unsettled Ferrer desperately fighting to get back into the set and match but was broken already in the second game. Andujar seemed to have really upped his game with new confidence after taking the first set. Ferrer on the other hand seemed to be very stressed out to regain some sort of control.

Andujar’s first match point came at 5-3 with an opportunity to serve out the match at 40-30 but Ferrer managed to deuce it up. After almost two hours of play, Andujar prevailed in straight sets 7-6 6-3.

Hopefully Andujar will still be on a roll tomorrow to provide us with a great match against Nishikori, who defeated Martin Klizan to get to the final.
