Venus Williams, older sister of Serena, has been handed a £1,950 pound fine as a result of her skipping a news conference, following her first-round defeat in this year's French Open.

The 34-year-old American was beaten by fellow American Sloane Stephens, 22, in a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1) scoreline and has failed to reach the quarter-finals of the competition consecutively since 2006. She was seeded at number 15 in the World before the tournament, and has been fined by the tournament's organisers after failing to show up to her media debrief.

Instead, Venus opted to release a short statement after her loss: "When you arrive at any tournament you hope you will have a chance to work your way into the event, but I didn't have that opportunity, she [Sloane] just played better than me today."

STAT: Venus was the oldest competitor in the women's draw at 34, and this is the second time in the past three years that she's lost in the opening round.
