Britain's 20-year-old tennis player, Kyle Edmund, has unfortunately been forced to withdraw from the French Open tournament, ahead of his proposed second round encounter with fellow promising youngster, Nick Kyrgios - due to a stomach muscle injury.

Following his hard-fought battle with Stephane Robert in a tense five-set victory, he was only the third Brit to progress through into the second round, alongside Andy Murray and Heather Watson [WTA]. He confirmed the news on Twitter, saying: "Unfortunately I have had to withdraw from my second round match here at Roland Garros due to an abdominal injury. On doctors advice and to avoid making the injury worse, I have withdrawn to recover and prepare for the grass.

Meanwhile an official tournament statement said: "British player Kyle Edmund, scheduled to play Australian Nick Kyrgios tomorrrow in the second round, has withdrawn from the tournament due to an abdominal muscle lesion." Edmund is expected to be out of action from anywhere between four weeks and six, but is believed to be focussing on getting fit for the grass-court season, with Wimbledon not too far away now. Krygios in the meanwhile, will have extra time to prepare for his next encounter, a third round match-up with either Andy Murray or Joao Souza; who go head-to-head tomorrow.
