Kei Nishikori has withdrawn from Wimbledon.

The fifth seed has been forced to pull out of the Grand Slam today with a calf injury, one sustained in his round one match against Simeone Bolelli, which he won in five sets - 6-3 6-7 6-2 3-6 6-3 the final score.

Nishikori was due on centre court later this afternoon, but as fans prepared to take their seats on the court to watch reigning champion Novak Djokovic face Jarkko Nieminen, who beat Lleyton Hewitt in the last round and is playing at his last ever Wimbledon, rumours began to spread that Nishikori would not be appearing for them to watch later on.

Marin Cilic v Richardas Berankis and Serena Williams v Timea Babos were the two matches to follow Djokovic, with Nishikori's second round clash with Colombia's Santiago Giraldo set to conclude the order of play on the court.

There were rumours prior to Wimbledon that Nishikori was injured, with a calf injury again the speculated problem just days before events were due to take place in SW19.

It was this injury that forced him to withdraw from the Gerry Weber Open in Halle in the build up to the Grand Slam, but, after a week of rest and recovery before Wimbledon, Nishikori confirmed that he was ready to play, saying, via Sky Sports, that his calf was "good" and that he was "feeling good on grass" ahead of his meeting with Bolelli.

However, the problem has reoccurred for the Japanese number one and his run at Wimbledon this year has been brought to a premature end.

Giraldo will now progress automatically through to round three, where he will face either promising teenager Alexandra Zverev or American wildcard Denis Kudla, who defeated 28th seed Pablo Cuevas in five sets in round one. They are third on court eight today.
