Serena Williams continued her impressive form with a straight sets win over world number 16 Andrea Petkovic, 6-3 6-2.

Serena dominates opponent

Serena looked fine form in the third round match, firing nine aces and winning 78% of points on her own serve. The world number one did not face a single break point during the match, whilst breaking her opponent's serve three times.

It was Serena's fifth consecutive win over Petkovic, who has only ever won one set from the American - in their first meeting five years ago. The world number one looks to be in typically dominant form as she builds to the US Open, and her attempt at completing the Grand Slam, or so called 'Serena Slam'.

The win raised Serena's record in 2015 to 42-1, her sole loss coming to Petra Kvitova in Madrid. Those 42 wins include four titles, three of which have been at Grand Slam level.

While the result is perhaps not a surprise, Petkovic will be disappointed not to have pushed the American a little closer. The German will now head to Cincinnati to continue her preparation for the US Open. Petkovic is a former quarterfinalist in New York, and will be hoping to gain momentum in Cincinnati as she looks to better that performance.

World number one looking to improve

Despite her comfortable victory, however, Serena saw plenty to improve in her game. Although stating that she "served better than in [her] first game", she also said that she has "a tremendous amount of improvement to do off the ground and everywhere else", and said that she "just felt off".

This will not be good news for Serena's next opponent Roberta Vinci, who has won just 14 games from Serena in their previous three matches - if Serena thinks she can do better after such a comprehensive victory, Vinci's chances of earning a first victory over the world number one seem slim.
