Johanna konta is the new British WTA number one. After her great run at Eastbourne she lost in the first round at Wimbledon. Since then Konta has not done much wrong, in fact she has only lost one matche since then.  Along the way she has defeated several higher ranked players, the Brit has defeated Andrea Petkovic twice, Konta leads that head to head 2-0 as she had defeated Petkovic both times they have met.  The second time they met was in Wuhan, after progressing through qualifying with relative ease Konta took no time to take out the thirteenth seed.

Victoria Azarenka

The next match up was against Azarenka. Konta tok the first set and broke early in the second set before the Belarussian retired with a leg injury. As Heather Watson had been defeated in the first round at Wuhan to Jelena Jankovic, this meant that Konta over took Watson for the top spot as the British number one.  Konta was on a good run again in Wuhan, her next match was going to be a big test and possibly the biggest of her career.

Biggest scalp

The next match Konta played in Wuhan was against the world number 2 and top seed Simona Halep. This was going to be a very big match and rightly so it was given top billing on the schedule that day. Konta like before won the first set, before the top seed fought back and levelled up the match at one set all. the final set proved to be cruical and Halep raced out to a 5-1 lead it looked to be all over. Konta though was not going away and she won the next six games to take the biggest scalp of her career taking out the world number two.

Venus Williams

The next match in Wuhan for Konta was Venus Williams. This was to be the loss mentioned early. Although Konta lost the match she still fought hard and was even serving for the match, Williams broke back and went on to take the match. All this has re-inforced the Brit as the new British number one. Another benefit to the run Konta has been on is that she has now broken into the top 50 for the first time.

Keep on rising?

How far will Konta rise in the rankings? very difficult to say, but on her current form there is no reason to believe she can not go even higher in the rankings.  Perhaps she can even break into the top 20 or higher. This would be great news for British Tennis on the ladies side as there has not been a lot to celebrate lately, this rise by Konta is badly needed, and will spur the other ladies on to catch her back up again.
