Kyle Edmund was knocked out of the ATP event in Doha as he fell in straight sets to world number six Tomas Berdych in a one-sided quarter final.  His first ever quarter final-berth on the main tour, Edmund's dream run in Qatar was ended as the qualifier went down 6-3 6-2.

Edmund's magic finally runs out

Having entered the tournament by virtue of the qualifiers, not many would have given Kyle Edmund hope of progressing much further, especially against world number 75 and eighth seed, Radu Albot, in the second round.  However, progress he did, defeating Albot in straight sets before dispatching Martin Klizan, the experienced Davis Cup player from Slovakia, in equally emphatic fashion.

He may have reached a slight bump in the last sixteen, when Spain's 13th best player, although joint 75th with Albot, Daniel Munoz de La Nava took him to three tight sets, but in the end he was worthy of his chance to face Berdych.

However the dream was to be crushed in merciless fashion by the big serving Czech, as he wasted little time in dismantling the Edmund game.

For Edmund, though, the week represents success with the 21 year-old set to better his best ever career ranking of 99 when the new rankings are published next week.  A member of Britain's Davis Cup triumph, much is expected of Edmund, who recently secured direct entry into the Australian Open

Meanwhile Tomas Berdych joins Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and surprise package Illya Marchenko of Ukraine in the semi-finals as they all seek to win their first trophy of 2016.  Nadal defeated Andrey Kuznetsov in three sets, Djokovic needed little time in making a mockery of Leonardo Mayer and 94th ranked Marchenko upset the odds as he edged out French veteran Jeremy Chardy in two tight sets.
