So, Djokovic adds his eleventh Grand Slam title and sixth Australian Open. His next challenge? Completing the set at the French Open in June.

He thanks the fans and finishes "see you next year. Thank you," in what was a surprisingly subdued victory speech.

"I'm extremely honoured to be mentioned alongside legends of our sport, like Rod Laver," Djokovic says, as he ties Laver for major title. He then sends his good wishes to Ken Rosewall, the only other man to boast six Australian Open titles.

"Thank you, I love you guys, thank you for your support," he says to his team.

"He moves on to thanking the tournament officials and staff. "There's a reason it's called the happy slam."

"First of all, I need to pay the respect to Andy and his team," Novak begins. "I'm sure you're going to have more opportunities to fight for this trophy." "I hope you experience a feeling like no other," he continues, adding "that's what happened to me. I wish you all the best."

Djokovic takes the stage.

Andy Murray sounded as downbeat as I've ever heard him.

"Finally to my wife Kim," he says "you've been a legend the last couple of weeks, thank you for all your support, I'll be on the next flight home."

The fans, for an "amazing atmosphere." "It's obviously very tough for me just now, but I really do enjoy plaing in such a great atnosphere."

Officials, ballkids, tournament officials are next on the list to be thanked by Murray.

He then thanks his team for all of their support during what's been a "tough couple of weeks off the court" for him

"I feel like I've been here before," says Murray. "Firstly, I'd like to congratulate Novak," he continues, paying tribute to his consistency

Murray started slowly, and paid for it with the first set. From there it was an uphill battle, and he fought hard to make the second and third sets close. At the crunch though, he was unable to capitalise on Djokovic's double faults at the end of the second set, and served up his own in the third set tiebreak that proved decisive.

Djokovic, as always, was far too consistent throughout the match. Murray could make inroads on Djokovic's game at his best, but simply couldn't match Djokovic's steely consistency.

Novak Djokovic 6-1 7-5 7-6(3) Andy Murray
Murray's two double faults were costly during that tiebreak. A shame, he'd shown such resolve to fight back into the third set, but handed the tiebreak to Djokovic on a plate.

Novak Djokovic wins his sixth Australian Open title

Wild forehand from Djokovic, two championship points coming on his own serve...

That backhand's well wide from Murray. Five championship points

Swinging serve down the middle too good for Murray

*4-1
Another double fault from Murray. This is almost certainly game over

*2-0

*1-0
Double fault from Murray

Djokovic 6-1 7-5 6-6 Murray*
Shoulder-height Djokovic forehand winner ends the first point, and he's in at the net to swat away a forehand. Murray's return is too much for Djokovic, and it's 40-15. Return-and-volley on the next point from Murray to bring it back to 40-30. Murray stepping in, in control of the point, but sprays the forehand wide. I'll go point-by-point for the tiebreak, Djokovic's score first.

*Djokovic 6-1 7-5 5-6 Murray
Deep backhands from Murray force Djokovic to net, and Murray has 15-0. He follows it up with a tame forehand into the net, and is then up at the net to swipe away a backhand winner. Big serve out wide for 40-15, and another one down the middle to hold.

Djokovic 6-1 7-5 5-5 Murray*
A backhand into the net from Murray isn't the best way to start the game. Too good from Djokovic in the next game as he smashes away a winner at the net. Backhand wide from Djokovic. Some nice forehands from Murray, but it's him that makes the error and it's 40-15. Murray nets a return and Djokovic holds.

*Djokovic 6-1 7-5 4-5 Murray
A short forehand wrongfoots Murray on the front foot, and he can only net. Another massive backhand and volley putaway gets him level at 15-15, before a 132mph unreturnable serve, an ace, and a missed Djokovic return give Murray another relatively easy hold

Djokovic 6-1 7-5 4-4 Murray*
Some lovely aggression from Murray there, a forehand right into the corner followed by a putaway volley. "No!" he screams, as he dumps a forehand halfwway up the net. That's a double fault from Djokovic, and it's 30-30. Murray can only net his return though, and Djokovic has game point. He takes it when Murray goes long

*Djokovic 6-1 7-5 3-4 Murray
That's a big serve from Murray, and he controls the point until Djokovic floats his forehand long. Nice forehand right down the line gets Murray to 40-15, and he holds when Djokovic misses his return. Can't remember the last time Murray held so comfortably on serve...

Djokovic 6-1 7-5 3-3 Murray*
Murray's in at the net to finish off the first point. He's powering up the groundstrokes again, but Djokovic is just able to absorb the power and wait until Murray missed. He repeats the trick on the next point to move to 30-15. It's Djokovic's turn to make the error now though, and Murray's aggression forces another one to bring up break point. Djokovic is in at the net to finish off the point and save it, and it's deuce. Some wicked slice exchanges end with Murray smashing away a winner to bring up another break point. Djokovic hits long! Murray breaks back, and is right back in this set!

*Djokovic 6-1 7-5 3-2 Murray
Murray has to work so hard to win each point, Djokvic's defences almost impenetrable. An error apiece move the score on to 30-15, and that's a marvellous return-and-forehand combo from Djokovic. The net cord is Murray's friend, and helps him to game point, before he finishes off the next point with a smash down the line.

Djokovic 6-1 7-5 3-1 Murray*
Murray's woken up a little, and forces an error for 0-15. Djokovic gets it back to 15-15, and puts away a smash to take the lead in the game. A Djokovic error makes things interesting at 30-30, and Murray forces an error to get to break point. Murray misses a forehand to erase it as it turns out another Djokovic serve was long. Quite a lot too, that one, a bad miss by the line judge. Djokovic serves his way out of the game.

*Djokovic 6-1 7-5 2-1 Murray
Murray has to work so hard for every point, a winner followed by a disinterested error to start the game. Djokovic also makes an error, and then can't return a Murray forehand. A good serve helps Murray to hold. Important for Murray to get on the board, you feel. This set could still get away very quickly...

Djokovic 6-1 7-5 2-0 Murray*
An easy hold to love for Djokovic, as Murray looks to have little left in the tank. This could be over quickly, losing that second set really took it out of Murray.

*Djokovic 6-1 7-5 1-0 Murray
Return into the net from Djokovic to start the third set. Murray returns the favour shortly afterwards, and Djokovic already has 15-30. A poor netted overhead from Murray gives Djokovic two break points. Djokovic misses to give up one opportunity, but breaks on the next point with a stunning passing shot off what looked like a winner from Murray. He hit it around the net post, and caught the outside of the sideline. Djokovic breaks.

Murray will be kicking himself for not challenging that serve. Djokovic had missed his previous two second serves and would not have relished having to hit a third in a row, on break point. What's done is done, and Murray is staring at a two-set deficit.

Djokovic 6-1 7-5 Murray*
A shot into the net and a long Djokovic groundstroke get us to 15-15, before a Murray error moves Djokovic ahead. Djokovic's first double fault gives Murray a sniff at 30-30. Another double fault! Murray has break point...but Djokovic goes back behind his opponent to save it. Replays showed Djokovic's serve was actually out - a huge moment as he'd hit two doubles in a row. Murray goes long to bring up set point, which Djokovic takes when Murray nets. Game, set Djokovic

*Djokovic 6-1 6-5 Murray
Big serve and groundstroke behind Djokovic gets Murray 15-0, and another serve-forehand combo for 30-0. Djokovic looks to have dropped his level ever so slightly as he sprays a backhand long for 40-0. Murray just misses crosscourt, and Djokovic's raising his game again, firing away a forehand winner for 40-30. Superb hitting from both players in a 36-shot rally, and Murray hits wide and suddenly it's deuce. Murray's volleys there aren't nearly good enough, and he's passed to bring up break point in what looked like an easy service game a minute ago. Djokovic is on defensive duty, and eventually draws the Murray error. Djokovic breaks, and that could be decisive.

Djokovic 6-1 5-5 Murray*
Djokovic, serving to stay in the set, hits an odd forehand long for 0-15. He's in at the net to smash away a high ball, before Murray's backhand shows its power once again to force the error from Djokovic. Variety here from Murray, and he misses a great opportunity for 15-40 as he nets a big forehand on the approach. This time, Murray's backhand finds the net, as does his attempted pass on the next point. Game Djokovic

*Djokovic 6-1 4-5 Murray
An ace, to continue Murray's momentum. Another one! But the umpire makes a late let call and Murray has to serve again. Ok, says Murray, and hits an ace anyway.Djokovic gets his racquet on one, and Murray sprays a forehand long. A nice deep return gets Djokovic into the rally, and Murray eventually floats a slice slightly long. Good serve out wide, but Djokovic read it and fires back a return  in the same direction which Murray can only net. Break point, saved with a big serve and a roar from Murray. Djokovic misses his next return, and then we have another gruelling rally which ends with a backhand into the net from Murray. Deuce. Another ace! But it's not long until a wild Murray forehand gives Djokovic another break point. Saved with a huge 93mph backhand that Djokovic only just gets a racquet on. Some nice angled groundstrokes end with another backhand winner cross court from Murray, who has game point...and takes it when Djokovic nets after a long rally!

Djokovic 6-1 4-4 Murray*
A Djokovic ace and a forced error get us to 15-all. Murray pulls the trigger on a backhand, swatting it away for a winner. Too passive from Murray, and he nets a forehand for 30-30. Murray's in at the net, and hits a nice drop volley that Djokovic can't get to in time to control for break point. Power from Djokovic off the ground, but Murray absorbs it before slamming a backhand winner cross court that catches the outside of the line to break back immediately. Murray breaks.

*Djokovic 6-1 4-3 Murray
Double fault to start the game from Murray. An ace repairs the damage, and he controls the next point with some heavy hitting to move to 30-15. Murray really stepping in on his groundstrokes now, but a deep Djokovic shot forces him to net. He does so again as he tries to accelerate on a backhand from way behind the baseline to give up a break point. Murray hits long on a backhand, and Djokovic breaks with a wide eyed look of triumph towards his box.

Djokovic 6-1 3-3 Murray*
Some huge hitting from Murray in the first point as he tries to apply the pressure, but Djokovic absorbs the power and eventually forces Murray to net. Stunning angle on that second serve return from Murray, and Djokovic can't return that. Djokovic nets and Murray has half a chance at 15-30. Murray goes for the backhand down the line and misses wildly for 30-30. Murray nets after another long rally and Djokovic has game point at 40-30, but Murray has really put some power into his groundstrokes this game and forces the error to get to deuce...and then nets a tricky attempted volley after being in control of the point. He's not giving up on this game just yet though, some nice variety eventually forcing Djokovic to mistime a backhand for another deuce. Murray slices long, and Djokovic holds when Murray nets an attempted pass on the run.

*Djokovic 6-1 2-3 Murray
Djokovic goes for the pass down the line at 15-0, but pushes it just long. Murray in control of the point but nets the backhand. Ace for 40-15. Spectacular point! The players exchange drop shots, then lobs, then Murray can pick his spot for the pass as he has all the time in the world as Djokovic approaches the net, and he makes no mistake. Much-needed quick hold there.

Djokovic 6-1 2-2 Murray*
0-15 for Murray on Djokovic's serve. A good serve from Djokovic for 15-all. Ace down the middle, and some more strong serves give him an easy hold.

A huge hold for Murray that, fighting off four break points in a game that lasted over ten minutes.

*Djokovic 6-1 1-2 Murray
A double fault is not the best start to the game for Murray. How do you follow that? With an ace of course. Both players unloading on the forehands, Djokovic eventually netting. Djokovic's returns are unforgiving, forcing Murray to net. Second ace of the game for Murray, but he's pegged back to deuce. Djokovic somehow returns a wide serve then sprints to the other side of the court to hit a pass past Murray at the net for break point. Saved with a big serve, but Murray misses to offer up a second break point. Djokovic pummels Murray's backhand, but eventually goes a little too wide. Straight into the net with that forehand for Murray and it's another break point. A huge forehand and a smash save it for Murray. Gruelling rally ended with a clever short ball from Djokovic that Murray can't get back. Fourth break point of the game, Murray is called for a time violation. Ace to save the break point. Djokovic nets a backhand and Murray has a game point. Huge swinging ace down the middle to hold!

Djokovic 6-1 1-1 Murray*
Murray steps in on a backhand, but just misses it down the line. Djokovic serves and volleys his way to 30-0. Odd attempted slice into the net from Murray. Great return from Murray, Djokovic looks to have gought back into the point, but hits long. Nice serve out wide to hold from Djokovic

*Djokovic 6-1 0-1 Murray
A slice into the net is met with a shout from Murray, who's clearly trying to fire himself up. A rally which feels like it will never end does when Djokovic lets a loose backhand fly out to be greeted with a huge Murray roar. Djokovic is in at the net to finish the point, and plays a shot at Murray's feet to stop him as he approaches the net. Murray nets, and suddenly it's 30-all. Big serve gets Murray to game point, and Djokovic floats a second serve return long. Big hold for Murray at the start of the second.

Murray has never beaten Djokovic after losing the first set, in 17 attempts. Things are not looking good for the Brit right now...

Djokovic 6-1 Murray*
This is more like it. Some big second serve returns help Murray to deuce - saving a set point on the way - before he goes just wide with a backhand down the line to give Djokovic his second set point. Djokovic nets to go back to deuce, and the big serve-forehand putaway combo give him his third set point...and Murray can't get that serve back. First set Djokovic 6-1.

*Djokovic 5-1 Murray
Drive volley into the net to start off the game from Murray. Good serve down the middle is too much for Djokovic to control. Djokovic cranks up the forehand power to force the error from Murray. Wide ace to get to 30-all. Djokovic tries repeatedly to put the ball away at the net, but is passed by Murray with a forehand on the run. A backhand into the net from Djokovic gives Murray his first game. After twenty minutes. Yikes.

Djokovic 5-0 Murray*
Murray's backhand goes long, 15-0. Excellent serve from Novak. Ace from Djokovic, but then he misses a backhand down the line. Djokovic then goes back behind Murray with his groundstrokes to hold. The world number one is in cruise control here.

*Djokovic 4-0 Murray
A trademark gruelling rally ends when Murray goes down he line with a backhand too good for Djokovic to get back in. Murray can't control a Djokovic forehand. The Scot tries a strange half-volley from the baseline which goes halfway up the net. He does the same with a forehand on the next point for two more break points. Djokovic's return clips the net on the way over, and Murray mistimes his shot long. Djokovic breaks.

Djokovic 3-0 Murray*
Drop shot from Djokovic clips the net on its way over and beats Murray. Djokovic unloads on a forehand to move to 40-0. The serve and backhand down the line combo does the trick for the world number one, who holds to love.

*Djokovic 2-0 Murray
Murray slices into the net for 0-15. Djokovic is forced to hit long with a big Murray forehand. Great second serve return from Djokovic and Murray can only net. Djokovic returning well, and when Murray nets it's two break points.  Double fault! Djokovic breaks.

Djokovic 1-0 Murray*
Murray goes long with a second serve return. Big winner down the line from Djokovic. Good, deep return from Murray, and Djokovic can only net. Nice angled forehand from Murray, and Djokovic goes wide with the reply. 30-all. Djokovic tests the Murray backhand - risky - with some slice, but nets to give Murray break point. Dismissive winner crosscourt from Djokovic to save it. Deuce. Murray returns deep and takes control of the rally, but hits his next shot marginally long. Long, testing rally, and Murray forces the error with a deep crosscourt backhand. Ace! And another strong serve is too good for Murray.

Djokovic stepps up to the line to serve. "Ready? Play."

Players are on court!

Good morning. Looking forward to the match? Players are on their way...

I'll be back at 8:15am to provide live updates of the match. Remember, the players are due on court at 8:30 for the first men's Grand Slam final of the year.

The last meeting between the two was a 6-4 6-2 win for the world number one in the Paris Masters at the end of last season. Both Murray, and the crowd in the Rod Laver Arena, will be hoping for more of a contest this time around.

Djokovic was looking forwards to the big occasion. "These are the kind of occasions that define you as a tennis player," he said. If he wins, it would be his 11th major title, putting him equal with Bjorn Borg. He's not that far off Nadal's 14 these days either, you know.

Murray's happy being the underdog ahead of the match. "I don't think many people are expecting me to win. I have to just believe in myself," he said, before playing down the poor record he has against Djokovic -  "it doesn't matter what's happened in the past."

Murray's most famous win over Djokovic is of course his Wimbledon triumph in 2013, where he won in straight sets. The Scot's only other major title has also come with a victory over Djokovic, at the US Open in 2012. In Melbourne it's been a different story though, as Djokovic has won all four matches the two have played, including three finals.

The two players have met 30 times during their careers, with Djokovic having won 21 of those 30 for a commanding 21-9 head to head lead. Things were close until Murray's back surgery in late 2013, since when Murray's only beaten his rival once. Djokovic has won the last four sets the two have played for the loss of just ten games.

Andy Murray had a much closer semifinal against Milos Raonic to negotiate. Raonic had been in superb form so far this year, and posed a stern test for Murray as he took a two sets to one lead over the world number two. Murray came through in five as Raonic began struggling with his fitness and Murray showed his class.

Novak Djokovic was supreme in his semifinal, storming out to a 6-1 6-2 lead over Roger Federer in a performance many spectators described as one of the best ever seen. Federer did manage to take a set, but Djokovic proved too strong as he took the match in four sets.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Novak Djokovic - Andy Murray in the Australian Open final. The players are due on court at 8:30am. Stick around for live game-by-game updates throughout the match as Djokovic tries to win his sixth title and Murray goes for his first.
