Victoria Azarenka shocked world number one Serena Williams after beating the American in straight sets in the Indian Wells final, winning 6-4 6-4. Going into the final as the underdog, it was an impressive performance for the Belarusian who is enjoying a resurgent 2016.
Losing streak over
Having lost the last five against Williams, many expected Azarenka's run against the top seed to continue. However the theme was set from the off for Azarenka as she broke Williams to love in the very first game of the match. With both players holding serve for the rest of the set it was down to Azarenka to serve out the set which she did to love.
Fightback from Serena
The second set started much like the first with Azarenka, now ranked 8 in the world, breaking Williams again with some great tennis. She then broke again before holding to take an unsurmountable 4-0 lead and despite Williams earning one of the breaks back, it was to be a case of too little too late as Azarenka held serve to win the title.
With this win, Azarenka improved her record for the year to 16-1 with her only loss coming against Angelique Kerber in the Australian Open. She will no doubt have her eyes on a return the year end champioships in Singapore.
Williams will head onto Miami Open where she will be defending the title she won in 2015 after defeating Carla Suarez-Navarro in the final. Azarenka however will be looking to gain ranking points after going out in the third round last year to US Open champion Flavia Pennetta. If she manages to win Miami then she will be the first player since Kim Clisters to win the Golden-Sunshine double (winning both Indian Wells and Miami Open).
