Serena Williams advanced to her third Roland Garros final as she defeated Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands. Winning 7-6(7) 6-4 the world number one extended her winning streak to 11 whilst at the same time ending Bertens winning streak of 12 matches.

Her opponent in the final is to be Garbine Muguruza who moved into her second Grand Slam final after Wimbledon in 2015 where she also faced Williams. Defeating Sam Stosur 6-2 6-4, the Spaniard breezed past the Australian who is 10 years her senior and will head into the final with confidence high.

Serena reaches 27th Grand Slam singles final

Williams on 10 wins, Bertens on 12 wins, one of the streaks had to end and neither player was going down without a fight. It was in fact Bertens who took the intial advantage as she broke Williams in the first game of the match before consolidating to take a 2-0 lead, she went on to hold this lead until it came to serving out the set at 5-4, unable to do so however, Williams broke to level the set before taking it to a tie-break.

Saving a set point on the way, the world number one took the tie-break to seal the first set. The second set started much the same as Bertens took a quick 2-0 lead which was quickly erased by Williams before getting another break to all but seal the match which she did to seal another win as she chases down Steffi Graf's Grand Slam record.

Bidding to reach her second Roland Garros final after previously reaching the final in 2010, Sam Stosur had been playing the sort of tennis that saw her reach number four in the world. However it was the current number four that was standing in her way; Garbine Muguruza was dealt a kind draw leading into the tournament, however unlike many others, the Spaniard took advantage of it to reach the semi-finals.

The match started with Muguruza very much on the front foot, breaking twice to take a 4-0 lead before seeing out the first set 6-2. The second set was tighter however, with both players exchanging breaks, unfortunatel for Stosur however it was Muguruza who had one break more allowing her the opportunity to serve out the match which she did on her first match point.

Fifth slam meeting between Williams and Muguruza

Yet to meet outside a slam, this will be the fifth time these two have met, with Williams leading the head to head 3-1. However, Muguruza's solitary win came at Roland Garros in which she beat Williams 6-2 6-2.
