The 23 year old attacking midfielder, who can also play as a winger, started his adult career at Borussia Mönchengladbach before signing for Werder Bremen in the summer of 2009. Marin has reportedly already passed a medical in London and will sign a contract in the next few weeks. The deal will be formalised when the transfer window reopens this summer.

As well as excelling domestically in the past few years, the German has also appeared 16 times for his country and has scored one goal. He made his professional debut for Germany in 2008 in a 2-2 draw with Belarus and made two appearances for Germany during the 2010 world cup including their 4-0 win over Australia.

Chelsea have been accused of being too narrow this season and have played regularly without natural wingers. Although Marin often plays in an attacking midfield role, his ability to play on either flank may be the creative spark that the London side have often lacked against sharper opponents.

Speaking ahead of Werder Bremen’s match against Wolfsburg today Marin said he was looking forward to playing in England. "I had a really good time with Werder together with many great guys here, and I have lots of nice memories, but of course I am looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Premier League with such an established club," he said.
