Nervy Celtic beat Inverness
Neil Lennon notched his 100th match in charge with an unimpressive display from his team. Inverness were close to achieving a point, but were poor in front. Joe Ledley's second goal in as many matches assured a happy ending for the Bhoys.
Celtic haven't been defeated since October, and they haven't even lost a point since that same month, but they were on the road of a nightmare today. The Bhoys were only saved by Ledley's goal after brilliant set-up from Forrest, and by ICT's lack of power up front, Sutherland and Gnakpa were virtually non-existant today (the French was only noted after some heated tackles with Celtic's center back Kelvin Wilson).
After smashing Hearts on midweek, all looked rosey on Celtic's road, in front, they had Inverness CT, a rival they had just beaten a week ago, so it all looked like an easy afternoon all the way for Neil Lennon's men. But it wasn't to be thanks to Celtic's under par display. Their only change since Wednesday was the entrance of Daniel Majstorovic in place of Norwegian centre-back Thomas Rogne, who couldn't recover from a calf injury. Celtic defence looked less solid than in the last few weeks, and, despite not being the Swedish's fault, he looked far off the pace at times. Steve McLean's display added more woes to the Celtic faithful, very nervous today due to what they were watching.
Celtic started the game on fire, thanks to Wanyama's strength, they looked like scoring on the 5th minute when the Kenyan headed a few inches away from Esson's goal after a superb corner from Charlie Mulgrew. But apart from that chance, Celtic didn't look like they were playing with the same determination they showed at Tynecastle on Wednesday. Neil Lennon's men have looked dodgy in many games, but their main strength has been the ability to win despite not being able to play a fast, free-flowing, Barçaesque type of play in every game. Their rescue came today with the only glimpse of combinative game they let shine in 90 minutes, after some quick passing involving all Celtic's attacking players bar Samaras, Ledley scored with a tap in after a brilliant low cross from James Forrest. The Welshman ran all over the pitch during the first half, either in an attacking sense, or in a defensive one, where he blocked and cleared Inverness CT few incursions to Fraser Forster's area, Johnny Hayes was ICT's star man during the first half, where he crossed several times, just to watch desperately that his teammates weren't able to shot or head any of them.
Mulgrew's shots were the only remarkable thing during the first 45 minutes, the Scottish's left back's free kick nearly ended in, but Esson reacted well to send the ball away, minutes later, another shot, this time from open play, went out right from ICT's goal. Forrest's speed and Mulgrew's shot accuracy had been the only pass marks from a poor first half display.
The second half wasn't exactly a thriller, at least, not in a footballing sense, neither team had barely created a chance, bar a Ledley's deflected shot that ended in a corner, then Daniel Majstorovic (or Steve McLean) changed the nature of the game. After the Swedish international was caught on the counter, he tackled Johnny Hayes to recover from his mistake, the assistant didn't see anything rough in the challenge, but McLean did. So Majstorovic was red-carded and a door was clearly opened for Terry Butcher's men to attack. They looked like scoring when Gnakpa shot out left of Forster's goal, the French striker was selfish and their teammates were furious at him, because three of them were clearly unmarked and prepared to receive Gnakpa's pass and score.
Lennon introduced Ki in place of Gary Hooper, so the system became a 4-4-1 with Georgios Samaras in front. The Greek played well during the final 20 minutes, he created chances, retained tha ball well, and forced Williams' sending off after some cracking display down the corner flag. Despite being level again in terms of players, the match remained a nervous act for the Bhoys, ICT's Ross went into the area but his shot didn't threaten Forster, it was one of the game's most dangerous chances, but he didn't shot properly, minutes later, he misshoot a proper Hayes' cross from the left, as the Bhoys were looking shaky in defense again. Samaras solo effort nearly ended Celtic's nerves, but Esson saved well his understrength shot. Celtic were slowly getting close to their goal while they looked to preserve the goal diference, that, summed up with Samaras' efforts to waste time with the ball at his feet helped Celtic get the three points again for the 14th time in fourteen league games. Despite winning, Celtic should up their game in the coming weeks if they want to continue their brilliant run, ICT on the other hand, haven't solved their problems up front since Adam Rooney left Terry Butcher's ship to join Birmingham.
