Tennessee Titans

1959 Nashville

Early Years and Success as Houston Oilers

The franchise was founded in 1959 by Bud Adams and began play in 1960 as part of the AFL, achieving early success by winning AFL championships in 1960 and 1961. With stars such as George Blanda, the Oilers became a prominent team of the era, although they experienced periods of decline before the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. During the 1970s and 1980s, the team experienced times of resurgence, especially with the arrival of running back Earl Campbell, who led the team to several playoff appearances.

Transition to Tennessee and Name Change

The franchise moved to Tennessee in 1997, initially playing in Memphis and then in Nashville as the Tennessee Oilers. The decision to move was driven by the search for a modern arena and a larger market. After two seasons as the Oilers in Tennessee, the team changed its name to the Titans in 1999, coinciding with the opening of their new stadium, Adelphia Coliseum, now known as Nissan Stadium. This change marked the beginning of a new era, seeking a stronger identity and a stronger connection to their new city.

NFL Success as Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans enjoyed immediate success under their new name, reaching Super Bowl XXXIV in the 1999 season. Although they lost in a dramatic finish to the St. Louis Rams, this period marked the franchise's heyday, highlighted by solid, competitive play. Over the years, the Titans have had successful seasons, including playoff appearances and divisional titles. Notable players such as Steve McNair, Eddie George, and most recently Derrick Henry, have been instrumental to the team.

Recent Years

In recent years, the Titans have continued to be competitive in the NFL, with six consecutive winning seasons from 2016 through 2021 and several playoff appearances. The franchise has been home to outstanding talent that has made its mark both on the field and in the community. Under the ownership of the Adams family and later Amy Adams Strunk, the Titans have maintained their commitment to compete at the highest level and connect with their fan base.

The history of the Tennessee Titans is a testament to adaptation, perseverance and passion for soccer. From their days as Houston Oilers to their current incarnation in Nashville, the franchise has experienced ups and downs, but has always strived for excellence in the NFL.
