Stats

Toluca is in fifth position in the Clausura 2024 Liga Mx Tournament with 20 points after 11 matchdays. These are fewer than their rivals ahead, Pachuca (22) and five behind leaders Monterrey (25), while Tigres is in the Play In zone with 18, the same as Necaxa. They have five wins, five draws and just one defeat, with 22 goals scored and 13 conceded (+9).

On the other hand, Pumas UNAM is eighth in the championship with 16 points, two less than the aforementioned Tigres UANL and Necaxa, and two more than León (14), who would be the first to be out of the playoffs. In these 11 games, the Auriazules have won four matches, drawn four and lost three. They have scored 19 goals and conceded 17, with a goal average of +2.

March 17, 2024 6:10 PM ET

Background

The match history between the two sides shows a clear advantage in favor of Pumas UNAM, as the universitarios are undefeated in five meetings. Toluca's last victory was in August 2021, on the 7th matchday of that year's Apertura. It was a 2-1 win at the Nemesio Díaz with goals from Rubens Sambueza and Alexis Canelo.

Since then, Pumas has won three times and drawn twice. The most recent was in April 2023 in the 15th matchday of that Clausura where 'Turco' Mohamed's team won 3-1 thanks to Dinenno, César Huerta and Toto Salvio. Meanwhile, the last duel was played last August on the fourth matchday of the Apertura and ended 1-1. Dominguez opened the scoring and Huerta equalized.

March 17, 2024 6:05 PM ET

How will Toluca arrive?

Toluca has improved notably in this Clausura Tournament after the arrival of Renato Paiva to the bench. The Portuguese, a trainer in the Benfica youth academy and former coach of Independiente del Valle, Bahía de Brasil and Club León, has once again found the solidity that the Toluca team once had under Ignacio Ambriz. So much so that the 'Diablos Rojos' can once again be seen as a candidate for everything, although they must first consolidate their position in the direct qualification positions for the Liguilla.
It is true that the elimination from the CONCACAF Champions League was a blow for Toluca. Renato Paiva's men had won the first leg against Herediano in Costa Rica (1-2), but at the Nemesio Diez they lost 2-3 and this meant their exit from the competition due to the away goals rule. Ironically, however, the team's best footballing moment came just after that.

The 'red devils' have now gone five games unbeaten since the elimination, seven in total as they have only suffered one defeat so far in the league. Starting on January 19, they drew with Monterrey (0-0) at the BBVA and won three consecutive matches against Santos Laguna (1-0), Tijuana (2-1) and Tigres (2-1). On the last matchday, Toluca drew 1-1 with Juárez. Jesús Angulo gave the visitors the lead and Aitor García equalized.

March 17, 2024 6:00 PM ET

How will Pumas arrive?

Pumas are getting ready for their next match, which will take place this Sunday, March 17, when they face the Diablos Rojos del Toluca, as part of match day 12 of the current Clausura 2024 tournament. The feline team will be looking to get back to winning ways after not having won in the last four matches they have played, with two draws and two defeats.

The outlook is not at all easy for the team from the capital, as this match against Toluca will be played away and so far in the current tournament, when they leave Ciudad Universitaria, they have not fared very well.

Gustavo Lema is aware that they need to get back to winning ways, in addition to the fact that they can no longer drop points in their aspiration to finish the regular phase of the tournament in the top six places, in order to advance directly to the Playoffs and avoid the Play-In.

March 17, 2024 5:55 PM ET
