The Arizona Diamondbacks fell late again to the Washington Nationals by the score of 5-1, snapping their streak of three consecutive series wins.

Both Brandon McCarthy and Doug Fister had fantastic outings to bounce back from bad ones in their previous starts. McCarthy was masterful as he pitched eight innings of two hit ball, while striking out seven. One of the hits a Jayson Werth home run in the seventh inning. Fister was just as good going seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and six strikeouts. Like McCarthy, Fister had one mistake to Aaron Hill in the fourth, that ended up in the left field bleachers.

D-backs reliever Brad Ziegler had a streak of 19 consecutive scoreless outings coming into Wednesday's game. That streak would come to a screeching halt, as the Nationals tagged Ziegler for four runs in the top of the ninth. Ziegler walked Denard Span to start the inning, gave up a double to Anthony Rendon, then loaded the bases by intentionally walking Jayson Werth. Ian Desmond and Tyler Moore both hit two RBI singles to finally get Kirk Gibson to pull the plug.

The D-backs get their third straight Thursday off before they face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three game weekend series. Wade Miley will make his fifth start already against the Dodgers on Friday, while Los Angeles has not announced a starter for Friday's game. As for Washington, they head home to welcome the New York Mets. The Mets will send Jon Niese to the mound and Tanner Roark will start for the Nationals.
