Homer Bailey couldn’t escape the fourth inning, wasn’t sharp with his command and the Phillies took advantage of that to put huge numbers on a spectacular win in front of their fans.

Philadelphia scored six runs in the fourth, added five in the seventh and continued to produce on their way to a 12-1 beatdown against the Reds.

Cincinnati managed to score first on an RBI groundout of Ryan Ludwick that scored Zack Cozart but that would be all of Cincinnati’s offense they would muster against Cole Hamels. The Reds only got three hits throughout the game – two of them in the first inning – and their bats looked anemic against the veteran right-hander.

The Phillies took advantage of that and jumped all over Homer Bailey in the fourth inning where they scored six runs. After a walk and a double, Cody Asche brought both runners home and Domonic Brown added a two-run HR to put Philadelphia up 4-1. Carlos Ruiz added another RBI single and that was it for Bailey, who lasted only 3.2 innings and allowed a total of six runs when Ruiz crossed home plate following a single from Chase Utley.

The Phillies’ bats were quiet until the seventh inning, where they came alive once again to add five more runs to the board. Cody Asche singled with the bases loaded to score Chase Utley and in the next at-bat, Domonic Brown cleared the bases with a double that drove three more runs. Brown later crossed home plate after an RBI double from John Mayberry.

Cesar Hernandez put the final nail on the coffin with a solo shot off reliever Sam LeCure.

Plenty of Phillies players were productive with their bats. Domonic Brown drove in five runs, Cody Asche added three RBIs and Philadelphia’s offense had 12 hits and five walks while striking out only six times. In terms of pitching, Cole Hamels got his 100th career victory after allowing only one run in seven complete innings where he struck out 10 batters and walked only two.

It’s clear nothing went Cincinnati’s way tonight. The Reds will clearly look to put tonight’s game behind them and will try to bounce back tomorrow on the series finale at Citizens Bank Park.
