Josh Collmenter had his team in a hole from the start, a hole they couldn't dig themselves out of as they dropped the series opener to the Houston Astros 4-3.
It took Collmenter 31 pitches just to get out of the first inning, giving up two runs in the process. Matt Dominguez hit a sacrifice fly and Jon Singleton scored on a fielding error by Aaron Hill to put Houston up 2-0. The Astros did the same thing in the second inning, making it a 4-0 game following RBI doubles from Jose Altuve and Jason Castro. Collmenter settled in to still get through seven innings, allowing the four runs --three earned-- on seven hits and five strikeouts in a losing effort.
Jarred Cosart was cruising along, sitting down the D-backs the first time through the order until Paul Goldschmidt's RBI double put Arizona on the board. The D-backs added two more in the sixth and gave D-back fans hope of a third straight comeback win. Gerardo Parra and Miguel Montero both hit RBI singles to make it a one run game at 4-3.
Tuesday's matinee will feature a veteran pitching matchup of Bronson Arroyo and Brad Peacock.
Worth Noting:
- The Diamondbacks made multiple roster moves on Monday, highlighted with the DFA of pitcher Trevor Cahill. Cahill has struggled all season with a 1-6 record in 19 games, with a 5.66 ERA. Arizona reinstated relief pitcher J.J. Putz from the 15 day DL and placed infielder Eric Chavez onto the 15 game DL. Will Harris was also recalled from Triple A Reno.
