The Arizona Diamondbacks broke their record for the longest game in franchise history for a second straight season, this time five hour and 32 minute game, defeating the Cleveland Indians 9-8 in 14 innings.

The bats were booming in the early going as both starting pitchers failed to get through five innings. The D-backs scored a run in the first two innings against Justin Masterson, a Miguel Montero RBI double in the first and a RBI single off the bat of Ender Inciarte in the second. Unfortunately for Arizona, starter Wade Miley simply didn't have it in him Tuesday night.

The Indians lit up Miley in the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits and a walk. Yan Gomes hit a RBI single, Lonnie Chisenhall hit a two run triple and Ryan Raburn hit a sacrifice fly. Yan Gomes also hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning to make it 5-2. The D-backs answered in the bottom of the fourth by scoring two run on a Paul Goldschmidt RBI groundout and a Miguel Montero RBI single.

A crucial point in the ballgame came in the top of the fifth where Wade Miley loaded the bases without recording a out and was removed from the game. Joe Thatcher came in and got out of the jam without surrendering a run. Didi Gregorious went on to tie the game in the bottom half on a suicide squeeze bunt, that scored Martin Prado from third. The D-backs took the lead in the sixth inning on a Aaron Hill RBI single.

With the one run lead, Addison Reed came into attempting to get the save but struggled mightily with his command. Reed walked Asdrubal Cabrera to start the inning, who later scored on a Yan Gomes single to tie the game at six.

Carlos Santana continued his miraculous night in the eleventh inning, blasting a two run homer to right field to give Cleveland the 8-6 lead. He finished the night 4 for 5. The D-backs stormed right back in the bottom half, starting with David Peralta's one out solo home run to cut the lead to one. Ender Inciarte tied it with a RBI single. Aaron Hill ended the game in the fourteenth inning, on a deep fly ball that landed for the walk off single.

Worth Noting:

  • Daniel Hudson, who is rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery, threw twenty pitches to Mark Trumbo in a workout session at Chase Field on Tuesday. Trumbo, who is also recovering from a ankle injury, is due to come back either right before the All Star break or after, according to Kirk Gibson. Daniel Hudson is set to come back in August, and Matt Reynolds is due to come back in September. Reynolds is recovering from Tommy John surgery as well.
