The Kansas City Royals used a barrage of late-inning comebacks and late-inning home runs to win games in the playoffs. Tonight, the Royals used their recipe for success in the regular season -- solid starting pitching, lockdown work from the bullpen and a few timely hits to push across a few ones. Tonight, the Royals saved the dramatics and rode starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie and the bullpen to a 2-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles in Game Three of the American League Championship Series.

The Baltimore Orioles opened up the scoring in the second inning when J.J. Hardy clubbed a double to center, driving in Steve Pearce. Despite a few threats, it would be all that Baltimore could muster against Guthrie.

Orioles Wei-Yen Chen was stingy for Baltimore, as he scattered seven singles throughout his 5.2 innings of work. However, the Royals were able to get on the scoreboard in the fourth.

After a Nori Aoki ground out, Lorenzo Cain smacked a one-out single to center. Eric Hosmer followed with a single of his own, and Billy Butler drew a walk. With one out, Alex Gordon plated a run with an RBI ground out to equal the score at one.

After five solid innings from Guthrie, the Royals turned the game over to their bullpen. Jason Frasor pitched the sixth. Adam Jones led off the inning for Baltimore and hit a pop-up into foul territory. Royals third baseman made a spectacular catch on the foul pop, diving into the stands to snag the out. Frasor retired the Orioles in order.

Nori Aoki led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to right, and was promptly pulled for pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson. While Dyson did not swipe a bag, he did go first-to-third on a sharp single from Eric Hosmer.

Baltimore dipped into their bullpen, bringing in young Kevin Gausman to face Royals designated hitter Billy Butler. Butler hit a fly ball to medium left field, that was just deep enough to score Dyson. The Royals had the 2-1 lead, with their fireballers waiting in the bullpen.

Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and closer Greg Holland ran right through the Orioles lineup, as they retired all nine Orioles they faced.

The Royals lead the series, 3-0, and will have the chance to sweep tomorrow afternoon.
