The Houston Astros took on the visiting Cleveland Indians on Opening Day. The game started at 7:00 PM EST and was played at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. Admirable pitching from both sides caused the contest to be close for all nine inning, but the Astros came away with a 2-0 victory.

Dallas Keuchel (W: 1-0, 0.00 ERA) got the start for the Astros. Keuchel gave up just three hits and three walks during his work on the hill. Those hits came from the bats off Yan Gomes, Carlos Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall. Keuchel also struck out four and threw a total of 103 pitches in his opening day win.

Corey Kluber (L: 0-1, 2.45 ERA) pitched very well, but it was not enough because of the poor run support his team provided. He went 7.1 innings and gave up two runs on three hits and two walks. The reigning American League Cy Young winner struck out seven and threw 102 pitches in his losing outing.

Luke Gregerson (SV (1): 0-0, 0.00 ERA) threw one inning of scoreless baseball. He threw six pitches and struck out Yan Gomes to end the game.

It was a scoreless pitching duel in this one until the sixth inning. George Springer singled to left field to score Jose Altuve, but was then thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double. The run counted nevertheless.

Springer finished 1-for-3 with that RBI in the season opener. Altuve, who has a career .302 batting average, went 1-for-4 with a run scored. He also stole a base on the Indians.

The Astros scored their second run in the eighth frame, when Jake Marisnick hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Jed Lowrie.

Marisnick batted ninth and played center field. He went 0-for-2, but made his presence felt with that forementioned sac fly. Lowrie, who played shortstop, also went 0-for-2, with a walk and a run scored.

Both teams have the day off on Tuesday, but will meet again on Wednesday. The second game between the two sides will take place at 8:10 PM EST on Wednesday at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. Houston will send Scott Feldman (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the hill to oppose Carlos Carrasco (0-0, 0.00 ERA) from Cleveland.
