The Miami Marlins took on the Atlanta Braves at 7:10 PM EST at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida. Atlanta got out to a hot start and kocked Miami's starting pitcher out of the game in the first inning. The Braves were able to cruise to a 12-2 victory.

Mat Latos (L: 0-1, 94.50 ERA) got the start for the Marlins. He was roughed up over 0.2 innings. Latos gave up seven runs on six hits and two walks and could not even make it out of the first inning. Latos, who signed a one-year, $9.4 million deal in the offseason, now has a 94.50 ERA.

Nick Markakis started the party with single to left field that scored Eric Young, Jr. Freddie Freeman then doubled deep to left, which scored Markakis. Christian Bethancourt doubled just after to to score Freeman. This was just the beginning of an outstanding hitting performance.

Still in the first, Chris Johnson doubled deep to left field to score Bethancourt. Andrelton Simmons singled up the middle to score Kelly Johnson, who got on with a walk, and the other Johnson. Young, who led off, got back up to the plate and singled to center and scored Simmons.

After Simmons scored, Latos was pulled to the sound of boos surrounding Marlins Park. Brad Hand came in and retired one hitter in the first to end the inning but not until he gave up a walk.

Alex Wood (W: 1-0, 3.60 ERA) took the ball and marched to the hill for Atlanta. He struggled early, but a first-inning double play saved him. In the end, he gave up two runs on four hits and three walks over 5.0 innings pitched. Wood struck out four.

The two runs scored off of Wood came off the bats of pinch hitter Donovan Solano, who tripled, and Dee Gordon, who had an RBI groundout.

After the Marlins got two runs on the board, Freeman continued his impressive day. In the seventh, he doubled to center and racked up another RBI.

It seemed to be all over from Marlins Park until the Braves decided to tack on more runs in the top of the ninth.

Alberto Callaspo doubled to center, which scored Markakis. C. Johnson singled to score Freeman, and then Cameron Maybin singled to score Bethancourt and Callaspo.

The two squads will meet again on Wednesday at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida.
