The bats were alive at Citi Field today for a beautiful day of baseball on Memorial Day. The Mets were able to strike early as David Murphy knocked a single into center field, which allowed Curtis Granderson to score and give the Mets a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Following that little hiccup, Phillies starter Severino Gonzalez found a groove and struck out six batters through the first two innings.

Come the top of the third, the Phillies were able to wake up their bats, too. Following a two-out single from Ben Revere and a Freddy Galvis double in the next at-bat, Chase Utley took a Bartolo Colon ball into right field, allowing Revere and Galvis to score, giving the Phillies a 2-1 lead through the top half of the third.

It didn't take long for the Mets to answer, as Lucas Duda answered in the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot to right center, tying the game up at two.

The Mets continued to put runs on the board, as Michael Cuddyer hit a solo home run of his own to lead off the bottom of the fourth, which put the Mets back on top with a 3-2 lead.

In the ensuing half-inning, the Phillies looked to tie the game. With one out, the Phillies had the bases loaded and the red-hot Ryan Howard up at the plate. Howard squared up and crushed the ball to deep center, but Juan Lageras got under it and recorded the out. Gonzalez was able to tag up from third and tie the game at three, but the Phillies couldn't add on any more runs in the inning.

Gonzalez's day was done relatively early. Through 4.1 IP, Gonzalez gave up six hits and three earned runs while striking out eight. All in all, it was not a terrible performance for Gonzalez, who was relieved by Elvis Araujo.

What might have been the best part of the game came in the bottom half of the fifth. Bartolo Colon stepped up in the batters box and hit a single to left field, which made all of Citi Field cheer for Colon, who recorded his second hit of the season. Later in the inning, Colon tagged up from second on a fly ball and made it to third, which sent Citi Field, and the internet, in an uproar.

The Mets didn't keep the game tied for too long as they put more on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. With two runners on and Justin de Fratus now on the mound, Wilmer Flores took a ball to the stands in left and gave the Mets a 6-3 lead.

Colon's day was done after six innings. At the end of the day, Colon had given up six hits, three earned runs, and two walks while he recorded six strikeouts.

The Phillies' bats were kept silent for the remainder of the game, and the Mets walked away with a 6-3 victory. Colon picked up the win, and he is now 7-3 on the season while Arajuo was credited with the loss. Jeurys Familia struck out two in the ninth and picked up his 14th save of the season.

The Phillies and Mets play Game 2 of the series tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled at 7:10 p.m EDT. The Phillies hand the ball off to Jerome Williams to start, and the Mets will send Jacob deGrom to the mound.
