Denver— Looking at the final score you would have thought the Denver Broncos had a very solid afternoon win against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, this was a Sunday matinee that was completely dominated at the dish by the Colorado Rockies.

Kyle Kendrick (4-11) took the bump for the Rockies in the rubber match of a three game series against the Cincinnati Reds.  It looked like another typical Kendrick start in the first three innings that he pitched. He had blown the early 2-0 lead his teammates helped build for him. Kendrick had surrendered four runs in the first three innings to the Reds. First baseman Joey Votto launched a ball into right field seats to give his team a 4-2 lead.

Kendrick would exit the game after just five innings of work on Sunday. He surrendered six runs off of seven hits and only recorded three strikeouts. His teammates bailed him out and were able to lead him to his fourth win of the season.

The bottom half of the third inning rolled around and the Rockies bats sprayed the ball all over the ball park. It all started with an RBI single by right fielder Carlos Gonzalez which brought the game back within one run. Nolan Arenado, who was in the lineup after exiting last night’s game with a wrist injury, gave the Rockies a one run lead by hitting a two run homerun. Ben Paulsen, who finished a double shy of the cycle, followed suit by hitting a solo home run right after Arenado.

The Rockies would not look back scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the third frame. Daniel Descalso added an RBI triple followed by a two RBI double by All-Star second baseman DJ LeMahieu. The inning ended when Gonzalez drove in LeMahieu with a two run bomb to right center field.

The Rockies chased two Reds’ pitchers after just three innings of baseball. Starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen (3-5) lasted only two and a third innings surrendering eight runs on seven hits and serving up two long balls to Arenado and Paulsen. Dylan Axelrod entered to try and douse the flame, but had the same success Lorenzen did. Axelrod also served up eight runs on five hits and threw three home runs to the Rockies.

Ben Paulsen and Carlos Gonzalez led the way for the Rockies Sunday afternoon. Combined the two went seven for nine accounting for 10 of the Rockies 17 runs driven in. Gonzalez and Paulsen each homered two times as well. LeMahieu and Arenado both added two RBI’s a piece as well.

The Reds will travel to face NL Central rival St. Louis Cardinals beginning on Monday. Reds will send Raisel Iglesias (1-2) to square off against Lance Lynn (7-5). First pitch is slated for Monday, July 27 at 8:15 p.m. EST. The game can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio and Fox Sports Midwest.

The Rockies will travel the Friendly Confines to face the Chicago Cubs. Jorge De La Rosa (6-4) will square off against Cubs’ Kyle Kendricks (4-5). First pitch is slated for Monday, July 27 at 8:05 p.m. EST. The game can be seen on CSN+ and ROOT Sports.
